Une nuit silencieuse au-dessus de Paranal
Une grande couverture d’étoiles contemple sereinement Cerro Paranal au Chili, alors que le soleil levant réchauffe gentiment l’horizon avec des éclaboussures rouges et jaunes.
Cerro Paranal abrite le télescope VLT (Very Large Telescope) d’ESO - et ce saissisant panorama révèle le télescope dans toute sa splendeur. Toutes les quatre unités du VLT, chacune de 8,2 mètres, sont visibles à gauche de cette image, alignés et prêts à explorer l’univers.
Deux télescopes auxiliaires plus petits, chacun de 1,8 mètre de diamètre, sont dispersés à droite de l’image; le VLT en possède quatre en tout, et chacun est mobile le long d’une grille de voies et peut être déplacé à volonté. Au loin, le télescope pour surveys VST (VLT Survey Telescope) de 2,6 mètres de diamètre - la dernière construction de Paranal - est visible juste au-delà de l’unité plus à droite.
Au-dessus et entre les deux unités plus à gauche, l’extension puissante de notre voisin plus proche, la galaxie d’Andromède, est visible comme une tache brillante dans le ciel nocturne.
