Der Sanduhr auf der Spur
Dieses Objekt ist vielleicht das älteste seiner Art, das je katalogisiert wurde: der Sanduhr-förmige Überrest namens CK Vulpeculae. Während man ihn ursprünglich für eine Nova hielt, hat sich die Klassifizierung dieses ungewöhnlich geformten Objektes im Laufe der Jahre als schwierig erwiesen. Für seine Entstehung sind eine ganze Reihe von Erklärungen geäußert und wieder verworfen worden. Nach neuesten Erkenntnissen ist er das Ergebnis zweier kollidierender Sterne – wenngleich noch darüber gestritten wird, welchen Typs diese Sterne waren.
CK Vulpeculae wurde erstmals am 20. Juni 1670 vom französischen Mönch und Astronomen Père Dom Anthelme gesichtet. Zunächst war er sogar mit bloßem Auge sichtbar; im Laufe der nächsten zwei Jahre änderte das Objekt dann seine Helligkeit, verschwand und tauchte wieder auf, bevor es dann für immer für das bloße Auge verschwand.
Im Laufe des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts erkannten die Astronomen, dass die meisten Novae entweder durch eine explosionsartige Kettenreaktion oder durch die Interaktion zweier benachbarter Sterne eines Doppelsternsystems zustande kommen. Das Aussehen der Überreste um CK Vulpeculae schien jedoch nicht so recht in eins dieses Modelle zu passen, was die Astronomen über viele Jahre störte.
Der zentrale Teil des Überrestes wurde jetzt detailliert mit dem Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) untersucht. Dieses verblüffende Bild zeigt die bislang deutlichste Aufnahme des Objektes und zeigt den kosmischen Staub und Emissionen in und um CK Vulpeculae und enthüllt damit seine komplexe Struktur. CK Vulpeculae enthält eine verzerrte Staubscheibe in seinem Zentrum und desweiteren Jets aus Gas, die verraten, dass ein System im Zentrum Material nach außen schleudert. Diese neuen Beobachtungen sind die ersten, die dieses System in den Vordergrund stellen und legen eine Lösung für das 348 Jahre alte Rätsel nahe.
