Scharlachrot und Rauch
Diese rauchige schwarze Silhouette ist Teil einer großen, dünnen Wolke von teilweise ionisiertem Wasserstoff – einer HII-Region – mit dem Namen Gum 15. In Weitwinkelaufnahmen erscheint dieser Nebel als auffallend rötlich-violetter Klumpen, gesprenkelt mit Sternen und durchzogen von lichtundurchlässigen, eingewebten Staubspuren. Dieses Bild zeigt eine der Staubspuren im zentralen Teil des Nebels.
Diese dunklen Himmelsareale enthalten scheinbar nur wenige Sterne, da die Streifen aus staubigem Material das Licht des dahinterliegenden leuchtenden Gases verschlucken. Die einzelnen Sterne, die in den Flecken sichtbar sind, stehen tatsächlich zwischen uns und Gum 15 und erzeugen die Illusion, dass wir durch ein Fenster hinaus in den dahinterliegenden entfernten Himmel blicken.
Gum 15 wird durch aggressive Winde geformt, die von Sternen aus und um den Nebel stammen. Die Wolke liegt nahe bei einigen großen Zusammenschlüssen von Sternen inklusive des Sternhaufens ESO 313-13. Vom hellsten Mitglied dieses Haufens mit dem Namen HD 74804 glaubt man, dass er den Wasserstoff von Gum 15 ionisiert hat. Der Anteil ionisierten Wasserstoffs ist der Grund, warum der rote Farbton das Bildfeld durchdringt.
Das Bild wurde als Teil des ESO Cosmic Gems-Programms [1] mit dem FORS-Instrument am Very Large Telescope am Paranal-Observatorium der ESO in Chile aufgenommen. Dieses Projekt hat mittlerweile mehrere Bildes dieses Nebels aufgenommen – im Juli 2014 veröffentlichte die ESO eine eindrucksvolle Weitwinkelaufnahme von Gum 15, die mit dem Wide Field Imager am MPG/ESO 2,2-Meter-Teleskop am La Silla-Observatorium erzeugt wurde. Es zeigt die Wolken, den dunklen Staub und hell leuchtende Sterne in herausragender Detailschärfe. Das neue und noch detailliertere VLT-Bild liegt im linken oberen Teil des Bildes mit dem 2,2-Meter-Teleskop.

[1] Das Cosmic Gems-Programm (wörtlich „kosmische Edelsteine“) ist eine ESO-Initiative zur Erstellung von astronomischen Aufnahmen für Bildungs- und Öffentlichkeitsarbeit. Das Programm nutzt hauptsächlich Zeiten, während derer die Beobachtungsbedingungen nicht den strengen Ansprüchen wissenschaftlicher Beobachtungsarbeit genügt, um Bilder von interessanten, faszinierenden oder von Himmelsobjekten anzufertigen, die einfach schön anzusehen sind.
