Von Antu zu Yepun – Der Bau des VLT
Die ESO wird in diesem Jahr 50 Jahre alt und um dieses wichtige Jubiläum zu feiern, zeigen wir Momente aus unserer Geschichte. Einmal im Monat während des Jahres 2012 zeigt ein besonderes Damals und Heute Vergleichsbild, wie sich die Dinge im Laufe der Jahrzehnte auf dem La Silla und Paranal Observatorium, den ESO Anlagen in Santiage de Chile und im Hauptquartier in Garching bei München verändert haben.
Das Very Large Telescope (VLT), das Flaggschiff der ESO auf dem Cerro Paranal in Chile, besteht aus vier riesigen Hauptteleskopen (englisch Unit Telescopes oder kurz UTs), jedes enthält einen Spiegel mit 8,2 Metern Durchmesser. Dazu kommen vier bewegliche Hilfsteleskope mit 1,8 Metern Durchmesser. Unser Vergleichsbild zeigt diesen Monat ein Hauptteleskop im Bau und in der heutigen Zeit.
Die historische Aufnahme von Ende Oktober 1995 zeigt frühe Arbeiten am Schutzbau des ersten Hauptteleskops (UT1). Das Fundament und die untere darauf montierte stationäre Stahlstruktur des Schutzbaus sind fertig. Die ersten Abschnitte des rotierenden Teils des Schutzbaus sind schon platziert – die Anfänge des breiten Spalts, durch den das Teleskop beobachten wird und die schwere horizontale Struktur, die die Schlittentore tragen wird, sind in Richtung der Kamera sichtbar. Dieses Hauptteleskop sah sein erstes Licht am 25. Mai 1998 (siehe eso9820).
Bei der Einweihung des Paranal-Observatoriums im Jahr 1999 (siehe eso9921) wurde jedem der Hauptteleskope ein Name aus der Sprache des einheimischen Mapuchevolks gegeben. Die Namen – in der richtigen Reihenfolge für die Teleskope 1-4 Antu, Kueyen, Melipal und Yepun – repräsentieren vier markante und wunderschöne Merkmale des Himmels: Die Sonne, den Mond, das Kreuz des Südens und die Venus [1].
Auf dem aktuellen Foto ist UT4 abgebildet, Yepun, das sein erstes Licht im September 2000 sah (siehe eso0028). Um den fertiggestellten Bau des VLTs zu zeigen, eignet es sich genauso gut wie sein Schwesterteleskop UT1, da alle vier UTs identisch sind. Sie unterscheiden sich nur durch die unterschiedlichen Instrumente an jedem Gerät, die den Astronomen ein breites Spektrum von Möglichkeiten zum Studium des Universums bietet. Die gelbe Struktur vor Yepun ist die M1-Aufzugplattform, die zwischen den UTs bewegt werden kann und verwendet wird, um die riesigen 8,2 Meter-Primärspiegel periodisch auszubauen und neu zu beschichten.
In den Jahren nachdem das historische Foto aufgenommen wurde, hat das erste UT nicht nur seinen Namen Antu erhalten, sondern ist mit den anderen Teleskopen auf dem Berggipfel zu einer Familie geworden. Heute ist das VLT das weltweit fortschrittlichste astronomische Observatorium für sichtbares Licht, und Antu, Yepun und die übrigen Teleskope auf dem Paranal haben eine Hauptrolle dabei gespielt, die ESO mit Abstand zum weltweit produktivsten bodengebundenen Observatorium zu machen!

[1] Yepun wurde zum Zeitpunkt der Einweihung mit „Sirius” übersetzt (siehe eso9921), aber weitere Nachforschungen ergaben, dass die korrekte Übersetzung „Venus” ist.
