ESCAPE in offene Wissenschaft
Europäische Infrastrukturen für Astronomie und Teilchenphysik erhalten Fördermittel für ein offenes Datenprojekt im Wert von 16 Mio. €

Das Projekt des Europäischen Wissenschaftsclusters für Astronomie und Teilchenphysik ESFRI-Forschungsinfrastrukturen (ESCAPE) wurde im Rahmen des Forschungs- und Innovationsprogramms Horizon 2020 der Europäischen Union mit 16 Mio. € gefördert [1] und wird im ersten Quartal 2019 anlaufen. Durch die Zusammenführung wichtiger gesamteuropäischer Einrichtungen der Astronomie und Teilchenphysik im Rahmen des European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI) wird sich das ESCAPE-Projekt mit den Herausforderungen befassen, denen sich europäische Forscher im Bereich der offenen Wissenschaft und der Datenzugänglichkeit gegenübersehen.
Das ESCAPE-Projekt wird die Bemühungen der beteiligten Institutionen vereinen, Daten und Software in der Multi-Messenger-Astronomie und der beschleunigergesteuerten Teilchenphysik offen, zugänglich und zueinander kompatibel zu machen.
Unter der Leitung des French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) wird ESCAPE in 42 Monaten die Zusammenarbeit zwischen 31 europäischen Wissenschafts- und Industriepartnern fördern, um wichtige Fragen der offenen Wissenschaft und der Dateninnovation in der datengesteuerten wissenschaftlichen Forschung zu beantworten. "Der Name ESCAPE wurde gewählt, weil unser Cluster darauf abzielt, Daten und Forschung aus ihren Begrenzungen entfliehen zu lassen", erklärt Dr. Giovanni Lamanna, Direktor des CNRS-Labors LAPP (Laboratoire d'Annecy de Physique des Particules) und Projektleiter von ESCAPE.
Dieses ehrgeizige Projekt wird die Zusammenarbeit in der Multi-Messenger-Astronomie und der beschleunigergesteuerten Teilchenphysik verbessern, indem es eine paneuropäische Infrastruktur und Methodik für die Speicherung, Analyse und Verbreitung großer Datensätze entwickelt. ESCAPE wird sich auch darauf konzentrieren, die Mitglieder der europäischen Wissenschaftsgemeinschaft über effiziente Datenverwaltung aufzuklären und die Grundsätze der European Open Science Cloud umzusetzen, indem sie den Forschern eine integrierte offene wissenschaftliche Plattform für die Datenanalyse bietet.

Die fachspezifischen Experten und qualifizierten Konsortien der Einrichtungen von ESCAPE sind breit gefächert und sachkundig. Dazu gehören ESFRI-Projekte/Meilensteine wie das Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA), das Extremely Large Telescope (ELT), das European Solar Telescope (EST), die Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research in Europe (FAIR), der High Luminosity-Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC), das Kubikkilometer große Neutrino-Teleskop (KM3NeT) und das Square Kilometre Array (SKA). Zwei paneuropäische internationale Organisationen, die Europäische Organisation für Kernforschung (CERN) und die Europäische Südsternwarte (ESO), sind ebenfalls Mitglieder des ESCAPE-Clusters. Auch das Europäische Virtuelle Observatorium (EURO-VO) ist aktiv an diesen Bemühungen beteiligt. ESCAPE bringt auch andere etablierte astronomische Observatorien von Weltrang an Bord, wie die der ESO (z.B. APEX, ALMA, die Paranal- und La-Silla-Observatorien), Forschungsinfrastrukturen wie das European Gravitational Wave Observatory (EGO-Virgo) und das Joint Institute for VLBI ERIC (JIVE).
