Viale degli anelli spezzati
Questa foto della settimana illustra le capacità notevoli di SPHERE (Spectro-Polarimetric High-contrast Exoplanet REsearch), uno strumento per la caccia di pianeti extrasolari montato sul Very Large Telescope (VLT) di ESO in Cile: essa mostra tutta una serie di anelli spezzati di polvere attorno ad una stella vicina. Questi anelli concentrici si trovano nella regione interna di un disco di detriti che circonda una giovane stella chiamata HD 141569A, che si trova a 370 anni-luce da noi.
In questa immagine vediamo quello che è conosciuto come un disco di transizione, una breve tappa tra la fase protoplanetaria, quando i pianeti non sono completamente formati, e una fase successiva, nella quale i pianeti si sono ormai formati, lasciando il disco occupato solo da alcuni detriti, principalmente polverosi.
Quelle che vediamo qui sono strutture formate dalla polvere, svelate per la prima volta nell’infrarosso da SPHERE, ad una risoluzione sufficiente per notare il minimo dettaglio! L’area mostrata in quest’immagine ha un diametro di appena 200 volte la distanza Terra-Sole.
Varie caratteristiche sono visibili, come un brillante anello evidente con bordi ben definiti - così tanto asimmetrico da apparire come la metà di anello, grumi multipli, vari anellini concentrici e un disegno simile ad un braccio spirale. È significativo che queste strutture siano asimmetriche; ciò potrebbe essere dovuto ad una distribuzione irregolare o grumosa della polvere nel disco, cosa per la quale gli astronomi non hanno una spiegazione definitiva. È possibile che questo fenomeno sia dovuto alla presenza di pianeti, ma fino ad oggi nessun pianeta di massa sufficiente è stata scoperto in questo sistema.
