Rosso scarlatto e nero fumo
La sagoma color nero fumo in questa nuova immagine fa parte di una grande nube diffusa di idrogeno parzialmente ionizzato - una regione HII - conosciuta come Gum 15. Nelle immagini a grande campo questa nebulosa appare come una impressionante macchia rossa e viola punteggiata di stelle e tagliata trasversalmente da strisce opache di polveri. Quest’immagine si concentra su una di queste strisce di polvere, mostrando le regioni centrali di questa nebulosa.
Queste sezioni scure del cielo hanno apparentemente poche stelle, poiché le strisce di polveri oscurano le regioni brillanti e luminose di gas che si trovano dietro di loro. Le stelle occasionali visibili in queste regioni scure si trovano infatti tra noi e Gum 15, ma ci danno l'illusione di guardare attraverso una finestra il cielo più lontano.
Gum 15 è formato dai venti molto forti provenienti dalle stelle che si trovano dentro la nebulosa e attorno ad essa. La nube si trova infatti vicino a grandi associazioni di stelle tra le quali l’ammasso stellare ESO 313-13. Si pensa che il membro più luminoso di quest’ammasso, chiamato HD 74804, sia responsabile della ionizzazione della nube d’idrogeno Gum 15. Il contenuto in idrogeno ionizzato è la causa della tonalità rossa diffusa in tutta l’immagine.
L'immagine è stata ripresa all'interno del programma Gemme Cosmiche di ESO[1] con lo strumento FORS del Very Large Telescope dell’osservatorio Paranal di ESO in Cile. Questo programma ha prodotto molte immagini di questo oggetto celeste. Nel luglio 2014, ESO ha pubblicato una stupenda immagine a grande campo di Gum 15 - ripresa con il Wide Field Imager montato sul telescopio MPG/ESO di 2.2-metri di diametro, all’osservatorio di La Silla - che mostra le nubi modellate dal vento stellare, la polvere torbida e le stelle brillanti della nebulosa, con un livello di dettaglio straordinario. La porzione di Gum 15 mostrata nella nuova e più dettagliata immagine del VLT può essere ritrovata nel quadrante in alto a sinistra dell’immagine, più ampia, ripresa dal telescopio di 2.2 metri.
