Lodewijk Woltjer (1930–2019)

Il più longevo Direttore Generale dell'ESO, Lodewijk Woltjer, è deceduto domenica 25 agosto 2019 all'età di 89 anni.
Lodewijk Woltjer, che molti chiamavano Lo, è stato il terzo Direttore Generale dell'ESO e quello che ha mantenuto la carica più a lungo, dal 1975 al 1987. Aveva una precisa visione del futuro dell'ESO prima ancora di assumere la carica di Direttore Generale e una delle tracce più significative che ha lasciato all'ESO fu la costituzione del gruppo scientifico, che lo trasformò da un osservatorio puramente funzionale a un'organizzazione attiva di ricerca scientifica.
Oltre a questa fondamentale modifica ed espansione del compito dell'ESO, il Prof. Woltjer ha supervisionato molti importanti sviluppi durante il suo mandato. Tra questi, l'inaugurazione del quartier generale di Garching e l'ingresso di due nuovi stati membri, l'Italia e la Svizzera, nel 1982. Ha firmato un accordo con il direttore dell'Istituto Max Planck per installare quello che è ora noto come il telescopio MPG/ESO da 2,2 metri a La Silla, ha curato la progettazione e le prime fasi di costruzione dell'NTT (New Technology Telescope), un precursore fondamentale del VLT (Very Large Telescope). Ha inoltre rafforzato le relazioni dell'ESO con altre organizzazioni, tra cui la firma dell'accordo con l'Agenzia spaziale europea (ESA) per il centro di coordinamento europeo del telescopio spaziale (ST-ECF), istituito presso l'ESO a Garching. Poco prima della fine del suo mandato di Direttore Generale ha ricevuto l'approvazione dal consiglio dell'ESO per la costruzione del VLT e ha fortemente sostenuto Paranal come posizione ottimale per la sua costruzione.
Lodewijk Woltjer nacque il 26 aprile 1930 a Noordwijk, nei Paesi Bassi, figlio dell'astronomo Jan Woltjer. Studiò all'Università di Leida, conducendo la sua ricerca di dottorato sotto la guida di Jan Oort. Nel 1957 ottenne il dottorato con una tesi sulla struttura del campo magnetico della Nebulosa del Granchio. Dopo il suo dottorato, Woltjer continuò nelle sue ricerche di astrofisica teorica e la fisica del plasma - studiando quasar, resti di supernova e campi magnetici in stelle e galassie. Ricevette due incarichi di ricerca post-dottorato nelle università degli Stati Uniti, tornò quindi all'Università di Leida nel 1959 come docente di astronomia. Divenne professore di astrofisica teorica e fisica del plasma due anni dopo, ricoprendo l'incarico fino al 1964. Tra il 1964 e il 1974 Woltjer lavorò alla Columbia University di New York, prima a capo del dipartimento di astronomia, poi come professore Rutherfurd di astronomia.
Dopo il suo periodo all'ESO, rimase attivo in astronomia e fu Presidente dell'Unione Astronomica Internazionale per tre anni dal 1994 al 1997. Partecipò a numerosi comitati, commissioni e divisioni nell'IAU e lavorò in Alta Provenza e all'Osservatorio Astrofisico di Arcetri.
Lodewijk Woltjer sarà ricordato per la sua decisa leadership dell'ESO, che ha posto le basi per il VLT - oggi il nostro telescopio di punta. Dopo aver lasciato l'ESO, ha mantenuto i suoi legami con l'organizzazione, visitando gli osservatori in Cile in diverse occasioni. Recentemente, nel 2017, all'età di 87 anni, si è recato in Cile per partecipare alla cerimonia della "prima pietra" dell'ELT (Extremely Large Telescope), il futuro fiore all'occhiello dell'ESO.
