Sul numero sempre maggiore di costellazioni di satelliti

Diverse iniziative in tutto il mondo stanno sviluppando costellazioni di satelliti da inserire in orbite terrestri relativamente basse, allo scopo di fornire servizi di comunicazione, in particolare in aree scarsamente servite da altri mezzi. La recente attenzione del publico e dei media ha focalizzato l'attenzione sull'impatto che queste costellazioni, che potrebbero raggiungere decine di migliaia di singoli satelliti, possono avere sull'astronomia.
I 16 Stati membri dell'ESO, così come altri Stati e organizzazioni di tutto il mondo, investono in modo sostanziale nella costruzione e nella gestione di strutture da terra per portare avanti la ricerca scientifica fondamentale al fine di migliorare le conoscenze per l'umanità. Le superbe condizioni del cielo richieste per la prestazione ottimale di queste strutture verrebbero compromesse dal passaggio di satelliti luminosi nel campo visivo dei telescopi. Vengono prese in considerazione alcune strategie osservative, sia dall'ESO che da altri osservatori, per ridurre al minimo l'impatto di queste costellazioni sulle osservazioni astronomiche.
L'ESO appoggia le dichiarazioni rilasciate dall'Unione Astronomica Internazionale (IAU) e altre organizzazioni che chiedono che vengano consultati gli esperti della comunità astronomica durante la progettazione delle costellazioni di satelliti da dispiegare in orbite terrestri basse che potrebbero interferire con le osservazioni astronomiche. L'ESO ha discusso la questione all'interno Consiglio direttivo degli Stati membri ed è pronta a collaborare con le agenzie nazionali e internazionali competenti per studiare come mitigare l'impatto di questi satelliti. L'ESO sostiene lo sviluppo di quadri normativi che garantiscano la coesistenza armoniosa di progressi tecnologici molto promettenti destinati alla bassa orbita terrestre con le condizioni che consentono all'umanità di continuare l'osservazione e la comprensione dell'Universo.
