Stipulato contratto per l’impianto di rivestimento dei segmenti dello specchio primario dell’ELT

È stato stipulato con la compagnia belga AGC Glass Europe il contratto per il progetto, la manifattura e l’istallazione dell’impianto di rivestimento dei segmenti dello specchio primario dell’Extremely Large Telescope dell’ESO. La compagnia sarà responsabile della costruzione della strumentazione, presso l’Osservatorio del Paranal nel nord del Cile, che sarà usata per rivestire i segmenti individuali dello specchio primario con una lamina protettrice di argento altamente riflettente.
Il contratto è stato firmato da Patrick Van Bortel, Vicepresidente del Vetro Industriale e dei Nuovi Affari, AGC Glass Europe, e Xavier Barcons, Direttore Generale dell’ESO, durante una cerimonia che si è tenuta presso il quartier generale dell’ESO a Garching, in Germania, il 18 giugno 2018. Un terzo firmatario, Philippe Bastien, Presidente Regionale delle Costruzioni e del Vetro Industriale, AGC Glass Europe, era impossibilitato a partecipare e ha firmato il contratto in precedenza.
Erano presenti anche Christian Klima, Console Onorario del Regno del Belgio in Bavaria, Quentin Derzelle, Addetto al Commercio del Console Onorario, e Alain Heyner di Belspo, delegato del Belgio presso il Comitato delle Finanze dell’ESO.
L’Extremely Large Telescope – attualmente in fase di costruzione sul Cerro Armazones, nel Deserto di Atacama, in Cile – avrà uno specchio primario di 39 metri formato da 798 segmenti individuali.
Il futuro impianto di rivestimento userà un processo conosciuto come polverizzazione catodica per ricoprire ogni specchio individuale di una sottile lamina di argento e di una protezione. Un processo simile è attualmente utilizzato per rivestire di alluminio gli specchi di 8,2 metri del Very Large Telescope. Tuttavia, usando un rivestimento di argento più riflettente, l’ELT potrà immagazzinare più luce, permettendo dunque agli astronomi dell’ESO di osservare il cielo notturno in modo estremamente dettagliato.
Sono invece già stati firmati i contratti per la fabbricazione e la lucidatura dei segmenti di specchio. I 798 segmenti esagonali saranno realizzati di Zerodur® di SCHOTT, un materiale di ceramica a bassa espansione, prima di passare a Safran Reosc, che progetterà il sistema di montaggio, pulirà i segmenti, li integrerà al sistema di supporto e poi li sottoporrà a test ottici prima della consegna [1].
Il nuovo contratto assicura la strumentazione necessaria al rivestimento dei segmenti di specchio, sia prima sia durante le operazioni dell’ELT. Dato che lo specchio gigante osserverà il cielo notturno tutte le sere, i segmenti accumuleranno polvere e, nel tempo, diventeranno meno riflettenti, dunque avranno bisogno di essere rivestiti regolarmente – alcuni segmenti al giorno.
AGC Glass Europe ha una lunga storia di innovazione della tecnologia del vetro e userà la sua esperienza per mantenere lo specchio dell’ELT al massimo delle sue performance ottiche, permettendo all’ESO di affrontare le più grandi sfide scientifiche dei nostri giorni.

[1] Ogni segmento di specchio avrà sulla superficie irregolarità di non più di 10 nanometri. È una straordinaria precisione: sono circa 10.000 volte più piccole della larghezza di un capello umano. Se gli specchi diventassero grandi quanto la Francia, le irregolarità maggiori sarebbero delle dimensioni di una coccinella!
