En stjärnhop inuti en stjärnhop

Stjärnhopen NGC 6604 framträder i en ny bild som är tagen med kameran WFI på MPG/ESO:s 2,2 meters-teleskop vid La Silla-observatoriet i Chile. På himlen ligger NGC 6604 bara ett vingslag bort från sin mer framträdande granne, Örnnebulosan (även känd som Messier 16). Den vackra inramningen i den här bilden, med stjärnhopen i ett landskap av gas och stoftmoln, visar att NGC 6604 är ett vackert objekt på egna meriter.
NGC 6604 är den ljusstarka gruppen stjärnor i den övre vänstra delen av bilden. Det är en ung stjärnhop som är den tätaste delen av en mer utspridd samling av ungefär 100 stjärnor som lyser med ett blåvitt sken [1]. I bilden ser vi också stjärnhopens åtföljande nebulosa - ett moln av glödande vätgas med katalognamnet Sh2-54 [2] - samt stoftmoln som finns runt omkring.
NGC 6604 ligger ungefär 5500 ljusår från oss i stjärnbilden Ormen, ungefär två grader norr om Örnnebulosan på natthimlen (eso0926). År 1784 blev William Herschel först med att katalogisera stjärnhopen, vars ljusstarka stjärnor är lätta att se med ett litet teleskop. De ljussvaga gasmolnen upptäcktes först så sent som på 1950-talet av Stewart Sharpless som noterade dem i fotografier från National Geographic - Palomar Sky Atlas.
De unga, heta stjärnorna i NGC 6604 hjälper till att bilda en ny generation av stjärnor, genom att med hjälp av starka stjärnvindar och strålning trycka ihop materialet ur vilket stjärnorna bildas. Den andra generationen stjärnor kommer snabbt ersätta den äldre. Även om de mest ljusstarka stjärnorna är tunga förbrukar de sitt bränsle mycket snabbt och lever korta liv.
Förutom NGC 6604:s estetiska kvalitéer finns det andra anledningar varför den fastnar i astronomernas blick, framförallt en underlig pelare av het, joniserad gas. Liknande pelare, där gas och stoft strömmar ut från unga stjärnhopar, har hittats även på andra ställen i Vintergatan och i andra spiralgalaxer. NGC 6604 är speciellt intressant eftersom den ligger relativt nära oss och därför går att studera i detalj.
Den här pelaren, eller “skorsten”, som astronomer ibland kallar den, är ofattbara 650 ljusår lång och står vinkelrät mot Vintergatans plan. Forskarna tror att det är de heta stjärnorna i NGC 6604 som ligger bakom att skorstenen skapats, men mer forskning behövs för att förstå dessa sällsynta strukturer till fullo.

[1] Den större samling stjärnor som NGC 6604 är en del av kallas Serpens OB. Den första delen av namnet kommer från stjärnbilden den ligger i, och OB kommer från stjärnornas spektraltyper. O- och B-stjärnor betecknar de hetaste typerna av stjärnor. De flesta av dessa stjärnor skiner starkt i ett blåvitt ljus, och är relativt unga.
[2] Namnet Sh2-54 betyder att objektet är det 54:e i Sharpless andra katalog över så kallade H II-områden, som publicerades 1959.
