På spår efter en kosmisk katt

ESO har släppt en spektakulär ny bild av ett jättelikt moln som av engelskspråkiga astronomer kallas Cat's Paw Nebula. Detta komplexa område av gas och stoft, där mängder av nya stjärnor föds, ligger i Vintergatans hjärta bakom lager av stoft och damm.

Nebulosans smeknamn, som man skulle kunna översätta till Kattassnebulosan, är passande som få. Det glödande gasmolnet påminner om tassavtrycket efter en gigantisk kosmisk katt ute på vift i universum.

Den brittiske astronomen John Herschel var först att registrera nebulosan, som även kallas NGC 6334, under sin vistelse i Sydafrika 1837. Trots att han använde ett av världens då största teleskop tycks han bara ha lagt märke till molnets ljusstarkaste del, som syns nedan till vänster på bilden.

NGC 6334 ligger ungefär 5500 ljusår bort i Skorpionens stjärnbild och täcker ett område på himlen som är knappt större än fullmånen. Hela gasmolnet har en diameter på cirka 50 ljusår. Nebulosan ser röd ut därför att dess blåa och gröna ljus sprids och absorberas mer effektivt av materian som ligger mellan nebulosan och jorden. Största delen av det röda ljuset har sitt ursprung i vätgas som glöder på grund av det starka skenet från unga, heta stjärnor.

NGC 6334 är en av galaxens mest aktiva barnkammare för tunga stjärnor och har varit föremål för omfattande forskning av astronomer. Nebulosan döljer nyskapta blåa stjärnor som var och en väger nästan tio gånger så mycket som solen och som föddes så sent som under de senaste par miljoner åren. Området är även hem till många bebisar till stjärnor som är ännu svåra att studera, gömda som de är djupt i stoftmolnen. Sammanräknat innehåller Kattassnebulosan uppemot flera tiotusentals stjärnor.

Särskilt slående är den intrikata röda bubblan som framträder nedan till höger i bilden. Den är troligen en stjärna som vid slutet av sitt liv kastar ut stora mängder materia vid hög hastighet, men det skulle också kunna vara en rest efter en stjärna som redan exploderat. Detta nya porträtt av Kattassnebulosan har skapats utifrån bilder tagna med instrumentet WFI (Wide Field Imager) monterat på det 2,2 meter stora MPG/ESO-teleskopet vid La Silla-observatoriet i Chile. Det är gjort med bilder tagna genom blåa, gröna och röda filter, samt ett specialfilter designat för att släppa fram ljus från glödande väte.
