ESO participa en la mayor cumbre internacional realizada en Chile
ESO fue invitado como expositor en la cumbre CELAC-UE en Santiago

La cumbre de la Comunidad de Estados Latinoamericanos y Caribeños (CELAC) y la Unión Europea, la más grande organizada en Chile, fue visitada hoy por el Presidente Sebastián Piñera. La cumbre es el lugar para la discusión de asuntos internacionales, con 60 jefes de estado y gobierno y sus delegaciones, además de 1500 periodistas de todo el mundo entre los 3000 delegados presentes. La cumbre tomará lugar entre el 22 y 27 de enero en Santiago.
La astronomía será un tema importante durante todo el evento, ya que imágenes de ESO y sus observatorios serán desplegadas en pantallas gigantes durante todas las conferencias. En el “Retiro”, una pequeña habitación donde los jefes de Estado se reunirán en un ambiente íntimo para tratar asuntos internacionales, habrá una maqueta del European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT) de ESO rodeada por constelaciones del hemisferio sur visibles de Chile, dando una apasionada visión del futuro de la astronomía en Chile.
Como uno de los actores claves que se asocia a la imagen de Chile, sea a nivel local o internacional, y a la par del lema de la cumbre “Apuntando alto” [1], ESO fue especialmente invitado por el gobierno de Chile para que formará parte como un gran expositor.
En un espacio central, llamado informalmente como “espacio de las estrellas” a un costado de las oficinas de la Unión Europea, ESO ha desplegado una gran exhibición, situada en una de las principales vías a través de las cuales al menos 2500 personas, tanto prensa y delegados, pasarán todos los días.
La exhibición comienza con el mapa de Chile con los principales observatorios de ESO (véase ann11080), que lleva un espacio abierto con paneles con información en inglés y español con datos sobre el trabajo de ESO.
La exhibición Awesome Universe -que celebra los 50 años de la organización- representa el corazón de la presencia de ESO en la cumbre CELAC-UE. La exhibición consta de una galería de imágenes a gran escala, incluyendo las mejores imágenes astronómicas de los telescopios de ESO y fotografías impresionantes de sus observatorios, y está extendida por todo el espacio en el que los delegados y periodistas pasean y participan en discusiones informales. En el centro de este espacio abierto, hay otra maqueta del futuro European Extremely Large Telescope. Por último, existe una gran cartel con una imagen astronómica de la Nebulosa Carina creada a partir de observaciones realizadas por el propio Presidente Piñera durante su visita a Paranal, en junio de 2012 (véase eso1250).
Notas
[1] Las estrellas también son un tema en el logotipo de la cumbre, basado en el trabajo del reconocido escultor chileno Mario Irarrázabal de una mano que apunta hacia el cielo. Las estrellas en el logo representan los cielos del norte de Chile, donde los mayores proyectos astronómicos se están desarrollando con la colaboración de Europa.
