Sorriso de orelha a orelha no #MeetESO!
No dia 16 de Março, um mês após o lançamento da campanha, foram anunciados os nomes dos 8 participantes do #MeetESO — o primeiro encontro de redes sociais do ESO. A 7 de Maio os participantes dirigiram-se ao Chile para uma visita de cinco dias a algumas das mais excitantes infraestruturas astronómicas do mundo: o Very Large Telescope (VLT) — o observatório astronómico a operar no visível mais avançado do mundo — e o Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), o maior projeto astronómico terrestre em existência.
Como pode ser visto pelos enormes sorrisos da fotografia, os viajantes do #MeetESO apreciaram ao máximo um itinerário muito completo, que passou pela sociabilização com o pessoal do ESO e do ALMA durante as observações noturnas realizadas num dos melhores locais da Terra, até à hospedagem na Residencia do ESO, que funciona como hotel para os astrónomos que trabalham no Paranal (mas é mais conhecida por muita gente como o edifício que explodiu no filme de James Bond Quantum of Solace).
O ponto alto da viagem ao Chile foi a oportunidade de obter observações diurnas do trânsito de Mercúrio sob a orientação de alguns dos melhores astrónomos do mundo. Esta fotografia de grupo foi tirada para marcar esta ocasião, a 9 de maio de 2016 no Observatório do Paranal do ESO, precisamente durante o trânsito de Mercúrio.
