A região de formação estelar intensa galáctica NGC 3603 *
Esta imagem da região NGC 3603 foi obtida com três filtros em bandas do infravermelho próximo (J, H e K) com o auxílio do instrumento ISAAC montado no Telescópio Principal nº1 (Antu) do Very Large Telescope (VLT) no Observatório do Paranal. A NGC 3603 está localizada no braço espiral Carina da Via Láctea a uma distância da Terra de cerca de 20000 anos-luz (6-7 kpc). É a única "região HII" galáctica massiva (assim denominada pelos astrónomos porque parte do seu hidrogénio encontra-se ionizado) onde um enxame central de estrelas do tipo O e B emite forte radiação ultravioleta que ioniza a nebulosa, pode ser estudado nos comprimentos de onda ópticos e do infravermelho próximo. Isto ocorre porque a nossa linha de visão está razoavelmente livre de poeira nesta direção do céu; a diminuição na radiação infravermelha devida a matéria que se encontra entre nós e a nebulosa é apenas cerca de um factor 2 (em comparação com 80 na radiação visível). A massa total das estrelas quentes O e B na NGC 3603 é superior a 2000 massas solares. Juntas, as mais de cinquenta estrelas O pesadas e brilhantes têm cerca de 100 vezes o poder ionizante do bem conhecido enxame do Trapézio na Nebulosa de Orion. Na verdade, o enxame de estrelas da NGC 3603 é, em muitos aspectos, muito semelhante ao núcleo do enorme enxame ionizante da Nebulosa da Tarântula, a qual se encontra a aproximadamente oito vezes mais longe de nós, na Grande Nuvem de Magalhães. Uma conclusão importante do estudo desta região é que existem muitas estrelas de massa sub-solar na NGC 3603. Contrariamente a várias previsões teóricas, estas estrelas de pequena massa formam-se realmente em explosões estelares violentas. Descobriu-se que a idade geral das estrelas na fase de contração que se encontram localizadas na região mais interna da NGC 3603 é de 300 mil a 1 milhão de anos. As contagens mostram claramente que este enxame está bem populado por estrelas de massa sub-solar.
