ESO assina acordo com UN Women e celebra Dia Internacional das Mulheres e Raparigas na Ciência

Hoje, no Dia Internacional das Mulheres e Raparigas na Ciência, destacamos algumas das medidas adoptadas pelo ESO no sentido da diversidade e inclusão e mostramos como é que a nossa organização está a celebrar este dia especial.
No dia 30 de Janeiro de 2020, o ESO e a UN Women assinaram um Memorando de Entendimento nos Gabinetes do ESO em Vitacura, Santiago do Chile, no qual o ESO demonstra o seu empenho em fazer avançar a igualdade de géneros, diversidade e inclusão. O ESO e a UN Women Chile combinarão esforços para promover as carreiras científicas e de engenharia entre as raparigas no Chile, assim como para criar oportunidades de formação para mulheres desfavorecidas que tiveram dificuldade em terminar a sua educação formal. Adicionalmente, o ESO fará uso dos Women Empowerment Principles como guia para estruturar e medir o progresso fomentado pelas suas ações de diversidade e inclusão. O acordo foi assinado por María Noel Vaeza, Diretora Regional da UN Women na América e Caraíbas, e Xavier Barcons, Diretor Geral do ESO, na presença de pessoal da UN Women e do ESO envolvido na implementação deste acordo.
Nos dias 7 e 14 de Fevereiro, e para celebrar as mulheres no ESO e mostrar o seu trabalho, teremos no ESOblog uma série de entrevistas com funcionárias do ESO, as quais cobrirão uma extensa gama de trabalhos, desde engenharia passando por operações de telescópios até investigação astronómica, e que esperamos possam inspirar jovens mulheres e raparigas a seguir carreiras em ciência, tecnologia ou engenharia.
O ESO também se orgulha em participar nas celebrações do Dia Internacional das Mulheres e Raparigas na Ciência do EIROforum, uma galeria de perfis com mulheres cientistas, físicas e engenheiras. O EIROforum é um fórum de Organizações Intergovernamentais Europeias de Investigação, que junta oito das maiores organizações de investigação da Europa, incluindo o ESO.
Internamente, o ESO está a tomar uma série de ações no sentido de promover a diversidade e igualdade na organização. Em 2017, foi estabelecido um Comité para a Diversidade e Inclusão com o objetivo de promover a diversidade no ESO e no seio da comunidade astronómica mais geral. Algumas das medidas tomadas pelo comité incluem a análise dos procedimentos de recrutamento do ESO e do processo de formação dos painéis de seleção. Adicionalmente, o comité deu início a uma série de palestras sobre diversidade e inclusão, convidando cientistas de todas as áreas e de diferentes formações a apresentarem os seus trabalhos. Para celebrar as mulheres em ciência esta semana, os membros do comité estão a organizar uma série de eventos dirigidos ao pessoal do ESO, com o intuito de promover os valores deste dia e apoiar as mulheres no ESO.
Adicionalmente, e para celebrar o dia, irá haver uma palestra pública no Planetário & Centro de Visitantes Supernova do ESO, organizada pelo Instituto Max Planck de Física Extraterrestre (MPE).
