O ESO na UNISPACE+50 em Viena

De 18 a 23 de Junho de 2018, cientistas, engenheiros, diplomatas e oficiais de governo de todo o mundo reunir-se-ão na Sede das Nações Unidas em Viena para a UNISPACE+50. Este importante evento celebra o 50º aniversário da primeira Conferência das Nações Unidas sobre a Exploração e o Uso Pacífico do Espaço, e pretende lançar as fundações para a agenda do Espaço 2030 — enquadrada na cooperação global em exploração e ciências do espaço para o benefício de Humanidade. A UNISPACE+50 marca também o início de um “segmento de alto nível” do Comité das Nações Unidas para o Uso Pacífico do Espaço (COPUOS, acrónimo do inglês). Tanto a UNISPACE+50 como o UN COPUOS são organizados pelo Gabinete das Nações Unidas para os Assuntos do Espaço.
Reconhecendo que a astronomia tem desempenhado e continua a desempenhar um papel fundador na exploração espacial — desde a rica herança cultural ligada à observação dos céus até ao desenvolvimento de aptidões, tecnologias e conhecimento científico críticos, necessários às viagens espaciais — o ESO participará na UNISPACE+50 com uma exposição. Participarão igualmente mais de 40 outras agências de exploração e ciências do espaço, institutos de investigação e companhias privadas, incluindo a NASA e a ESA.
A UNISPACE+50 começará com um simpósio de 18 a 19 de Junho sobre temas da agenda Espaço 2030, aberto a delegações nacionais das NU, assim como a organizações de exploração e ciências do espaço. No dia 20 de Junho, a cerimónia de abertura da UNISPACE+50 marcará o início do UN COPUOS, o qual contará com a presença do Presidente da Áustria, Chefes de Estado, Ministros e outros dignatários, incluindo o astronauta da NASA, Scott Kelly.
O ESO apresentará uma exposição de 18 a 23 de Junho, incluindo um dia aberto para o público, no sábado dia 23, das 09:00 às 12:30. Os visitantes da exposição do ESO aprenderão mais sobre como a astronomia e o ESO contribuem para a agenda do Espaço 2030 e sobre o projeto mais vasto de desenvolvimento global que o ESO apoia. O pessoal do ESO destacará o papel da astronomia feita a partir do solo na exploração espacial e as parcerias globais, astronomia e capacidade de construção do ESO. A exposição do ESO publicitará ainda as mulheres na astronomia e dará aos visitantes um resumo da organização, que cobrirá os observatórios astronómicos de vanguarda situados no Chile, resultados científicos e o novo Planetário & Centro de Visitantes Supernova do ESO, localizado na Sede do ESO em Garching, na Alemanha.
