Assinado acordo para o Instrumento METIS do E-ELT

O ESO assinou um acordo com um consórcio internacional de instituições europeias [1] para o design e construção do instrumento METIS, uma câmara e espectrógrafo infravermelho, que será instalado no European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT).
O acordo foi assinado por H. W. (Willen) te Beest, Vice-Presidente do Conselho de Administração, Universidade de Leiden, em prol do consórcio, e Tim de Zeeuw, Diretor Geral do ESO, numa cerimónia que se realizou a 28 de setembro de 2015 no Clube da Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Leiden, Holanda.
Estiveram igualmente presentes na cerimónia Bernhard Brandl, Investigador Principal do METIS, todos os co-investigadores e os gestores de projeto de todos os parceiros do consórcio.
O METIS é um dos instrumentos de fase 1 para o E-ELT. Fará imagens e espectroscopia de média resolução no intervalo de comprimentos de onda que vai dos 3 aos 19 micrómetros, e espectroscopia de campo integral de alta resolução no domínio de comprimentos de onda 3 — 5,3 micrómetros. O METIS é o único instrumento de fase 1 que operará nestes comprimentos de onda do infravermelho médio, complementando assim a câmara MICADO e o espectrógrafo HARMONI.
O instrumento METIS, em conjunção com o enorme poder colector e resolução do E-ELT, permitirá o avanço de muitos tópicos da astronomia, incluindo o estudo de discos protoplanetários e a formação de planetas, investigações detalhadas das propriedades de exoplanetas e, mais próximo de nós, a formação e história do Sistema Solar. O METIS estudará também o crescimento de buracos negros supermassivos e a formação estelar em galáxias do Universo primordial.
O METIS, como outros instrumentos para o E-ELT, é o culminar de um extenso trabalho de desenvolvimento executado tanto pelo ESO como pela comunidade ao longo de muitos anos. É o sucessor de instrumentos anteriores do ESO no infravermelho médio, como o VISIR e o CRIRES.
Na mitologia grega, Metis era a primeira mulher de Zeus e mãe de Atena, a deusa da sabedoria.
