Prémio Olivier Chesneau 2015 atribuído a Julien Milli

O Prémio Olivier Chesneau de 2015 foi atribuído a Julien Milli em reconhecimento do seu trabalho extraordinário no campo da obtenção de imagens de alta resolução angular e elevado contraste de discos ténues em torno de estrelas brilhantes.
Estabelecido pelo ESO e pelo Observatoire de la Côte d´Azur (OCA), o prémio é atribuído em memória de Olivier Chesneau, um dos mais ativos e prolíficos membros da comunidade de interferometria ótica. Julien Milli é o primeiro investigador a receber este prémio.
O júri ficou particularmente impressionado pela combinação de um profundo conhecimento de diferentes técnicas de ótica adaptativa e da capacidade de utilizar este conhecimento para extrair a melhor informação científica possivel dos instrumentos NACO e SPHERE demonstrada por Julien. A sua competência no estudo de estruturas de disco é bastante reconhecida, tendo sido importante no sucesso da exploração científica preliminar do SPHERE. A produtividade científica de Julien e a sua extensa base de colaborações num campo tão desafiante como este foi também considerada impressionante.
Julien Milli completou a sua tese de doutoramento na Universidade Joseph Fourier em Grenoble, França, em setembro de 2014. O seu trabalho sobre a obtenção de imagens de discos com os instrumentos NACO e SPHERE, ambos montados no Very Large Telescope do ESO, foi levado a cabo no âmbito de uma bolsa ESO, sob a supervisão de D. Mawet (ESO/Caltech, Pasadena, USA) e D. Moillet (Institut de Planétologie et d'Astrophysique de Grenoble, França). Julien obteve agora uma bolsa de pós-doutoramento no ESO, observando regularmente com o SPHERE no intuito de prosseguir o seu trabalho sobre formação de sistemas planetários e imagens de alta resolução.
Olivier Chesneau (1972-2014) era um cientista talentoso, animado e apaixonado pelo seu trabalho. Levou a cabo trabalho pioneiro em interferometria de linha de base longa no visível e infravermelho, no âmbito do estudo da formação de discos em torno de muitos objetos astronómicos, incluindo estrelas massivas evoluídas, nebulosas planetárias e novas.
Os seus resultados principais incluem o estudo do meio próximo de Eta Carinae e doutras estrelas massivas, a primeira deteção direta de discos em nebulosas planetárias, evidências de ejeções bipolares de poeira a partir de novas pouco depois da erupção e a descoberta da maior estrela hipergigante amarela na Via Láctea.
As suas descobertas foram bastante publicitadas em notas de imprensa do ESO e do CNRS-INSU. Foi-lhe ainda atribuído o Prémio Michelson de 2012 da União Astronómica Internacional e do Instituto Mount Wilson por contribuições importantes para a astrofísica estelar obtidas por interferometria de linha de base longa.
O Prémio Olivier Chesneau de 2015 será entregue a Julien Milli durante a conferência internacional, Physics of Evolved Stars (Física de Estrelas Evoluídas), que se realizará em memória de Olivier Chesneau de 2 a 12 de junho de 2015 em Nice, França.
