Pyłowa pułapka
Obraz z Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) pokazuje V1247 Orionis, młodą, gorącą gwiazdę otoczoną przez dynamiczny pierścień gazu i pyłu, znany jako dysk okołogwiazdowy. Dysk ten widoczny jest tutaj w dwóch częściach: wyraźnie zdefiniowany centralny pierścień materii i położona na zewnątrz bardziej delikatna struktura w kształcie półkola
Uważa się, iż obszar pomiędzy pierścieniem, a półkolem, widoczny jako ciemny pasek, został wytworzony przez młode planety torujące sobie drogę w dysku. Gdy planeta okrąża swoją gwiazdę macierzystą, jej ruch wytwarza obszary wysokiego ciśnienia po obu stronach orbity, podobnie jak statek tworzy fale łukowe, gdy przecina taflę wody. Obszary takiego wysokiego ciśnienia mogą stać się barierami ochronnymi wokół miejsc formowania się planet; cząstki pyłu są uwięzione wewnątrz nich przez miliony lat, co daje im czas i przestrzeń do grupowania się razem i wzrostu.
Znakomita rozdzielczość ALMA pozwala astronomom na zbadanie po raz pierwszy wewnętrznej struktury tego typu pułapek na pył. Obraz ukazuje nie tylko pułapkę w kształcie półkola na zewnętrznym brzegu ciemnego pasa, ale także obszary nadwyżki pyłu wewnątrz pierścienia, które mogą wskazywać na drugą pułapkę pyłową, która uformowała się wewnątrz potencjalnej orbity planety. Potwierdza to przewidywania wcześniejszych komputerowych symulacji.
Wpadanie pyłu w pułapkę jest jednym z możliwych rozwiązań głównej przeszkody w obecnych teoriach formowania planet, które przewidują, że ziarna pyłu powinny dryfować w kierunku gwiazdy centralnej i być niszczone zanim będą miały czas na wzrost do rozmiarów planetozymali (tzw. problem radialnego dryftu).
