ESO nadal pozostaje najbardziej wydajnym naukowo obserwatorium naziemnym na świecie

Przegląd recenzowanych publikacji naukowych opublikowanych w 2015 roku oraz użycia danych z teleskopów i instrumentów ESO pokazały, że ESO pozostaje najbardziej wydajnym naukowo obserwatorium naziemnym na świecie. Astronomowie wykorzystali dane obserwacyjne z urządzeń ESO do napisania w ubiegłym roku 860 recenzowanych publikacji.
W roku 2015 było 550 publikacji wskazujących na ESO, które korzystały z danych zebranych za pomocą Very Large Telescope (VLT) lub VInterferometru VLT (VLTI) na Cerro Paranal. Trzy najbardziej wydajne instrumenty VLT pod względem liczby publikacji, to UVES, FORS2 oraz X-shooter, które miały odpowiednio 144, 91 i 78 artykułów naukowych. Dane z teleskopu do przeglądów VISTA na Cerro Paranal doprowadziły do 73 publikacji.
Urządzenia pracujące w La Silla dostarczyły danych dla łącznie ponad 200 publikacji. HARPS pozostaje najbardziej wydajnym instrumentem w La Silla, z 71 publikacjami, czyli o 10 więcej niż rok wcześniej.
Liczba publikacji bazujących na europejskim czasie obserwacyjnym na Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) osiągnęła 73 dla roku 2015, a 32 artykuły powstały dzięki obserwacjom wykonanym przez teleskop Atacama Pathfinder Experiment (APEX) w czasie obserwacyjnym ESO-APEX. APEX jest wspólnym projektem Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy, Onsala Space Observatory oraz ESO i jest użytkowany przez ESO na płaskowyżu Chajnantor w chilijskim regionie Atakama.
Porównanie liczby publikacji związanych z obserwacjami za pomocą największych obserwatoriów na świecie plasuje obserwatoria ESO na szczycie listy. Warto zauważyć, że metody użyte do uzyskania tych statystyk różnią się pomiędzy obserwatoriami, zatem wykresy nie mogą by porównane dokładnie. Aczkolwiek widać wyraźnie, że ESO nadal znacznie przewyższa jakiekolwiek inne obserwatorium naziemne oraz pozostaje tuż przed Kosmicznym Teleskopem Hubble'a, należącym do NASA/ESA.
Zaprezentowane rezultaty uwydatniają istotny wkład ESO w badania astronomiczne. Publikacja statystyk daje pogląd na to ile pracy naukowej jest prowadzone przy pomocy danych z poszczególnych obserwatoriów, ale nie wskazuje jakie jest ich szerszy wpływ na naukę.
Wykresy są publikowane co roku jako Basic ESO Publication Statistics [1], wydawane przez Bibliotekę ESO i obliczane na podstawie ESO Telescope Bibliography (telbib), bazy danych zawierającej recenzowane publikacje, które korzystają z danych ESO [2]. ESO czyni wiele wysiłków, aby zidentyfikować wszystkie recenzowane publikacje, które korzystają z danych ESO i uważa bazę telbib za zasadniczą kompletną.
Interaktywne wykresy wybranych statystyk są także dostępne online. Wykresy te pokazują całą zawartość bazy danych telbib [3], która obejmuje dane dla publikacji od roku 1996 do chwili obecnej. Można z nich korzystać do badania wielu aspektów historii publikacji, w tym rozwoju prac naukowych korzystających z instrumentów ESO oraz użycia danych archiwalnych.
