ESO przyznało kontrakty na systemy wsporników dla zwierciadła głównego E-ELT

ESO podpisało kontrakty z CESA (Hiszpania) i VDL (Holandia) na zaprojektowanie i produkcję testowych modeli [1] wsporników zwierciadeł i związanego z nimi sprzętu dla głównego zwierciadła Ekstremalnie Wielkiego Teleskopu Europejskiego (E-ELT). Prace będą kontynuacją wcześniej opracowanych prototypów, ich intensywnych testów w laboratoriach ESO i dokładnej oceny zdobytych doświadczeń.
Kompletne zwierciadło główne E-ELT będzie mieć średnicę 39 metrów. Powierzchnia lustra będzie składać się z 798 sześciokątnych segmentów oraz zestawu użytkowego – łącznie 931 segmentów. Dzięki sześciokątnemu kształtowi dla wszystkich segmentów można użyć wspólnej struktury podpór. Kontrakty obejmują dostarczenie szczegółowej i kompletnej instrukcji oraz rysunków technicznych dla przyszłej produkcji. Zawierają także opracowanie procedur potrzebnych do integracji podpór ze szklanymi segmentami E-ELT, transportu ich części składowych oraz działania i konserwacji elementów.
Kontrakty z CESA i VDL ustalono na początkowy okres 30 miesięcy. Wydzielono wstępne i właściwe fazy, po których nastąpi produkcja modeli inżynieryjnych oraz testy. W ramach każdego z kontraktów dostarczone zostaną cztery testowe modele. Pod koniec projektu, ale jeszcze przed ocenami dokonywanymi na rozpoczęcie produkcji serii, modele testowe zostaną zintegrowane i przetestowane w dedykowanym laboratorium ESO przeznaczonym do segmentów zwierciadła głównego E-ELT.
Pierwsze światło E-ELT planowane jest na 2024 rok. Wtedy teleskop zacznie zmagać się z największymi astronomicznymi wyzwaniami naszych czasów. Gigantyczny teleskop pozwoli prawdopodobnie na zbadane nieznanych obecnie tajemnic Wszechświata – będzie „największym okiem świata na niebo”.

[1] Chodzi o model do testów zgodności z wymaganiami (ang. qualification models), czyli wersje sprzętu używane do zademonstrowania, że projekt w pełni odpowiada wymaganiom.
