De Omeganevel in schitterend aquarel

Deze ESO opname onthult een schitterend portret van de Omeganevel, een kraamkamer van sterren waar babysterren een gigantisch aquarel vormen van kleurrijk stof en gas.
De Omeganevel, of Zwaannevel, is een indrukwekkende kraamkamer van sterren op ongeveer 5500 lichtjaar afstand in het sterrenbeeld Boogschutter. De nevel is een actief stervorminggebied van gas en stof en is ongeveer 15 lichtjaar in doorsnede. Onlangs is hier een cluster van zware, hete sterren geboren. Het felle licht en de sterke wind van deze kolossale babysterren heeft een opmerkelijk fijne draadstructuur gecreëerd in de gas- en stofwolken.
Door een kleine telescoop bekeken, heeft de nevel een vorm die sommige waarnemers doet denken aan de laatste letter van het Griekse alfabet, Omega, terwijl anderen er een zwaan in zien met een sierlijke, lange, gebogen hals. Andere bijnamen voor dit tot de verbeelding sprekende kosmische oriëntatiepunt zijn de Paardenhoef en de Zeekreeftnevel.
De Zwitserse astronoom Jean-Philippe Loys de Chéseaux ontdekte de nevel rond 1745. De Franse kometenjager Charles Messier herontdekte de nevel ongeveer twintig jaar later en nam hem als nummer 17 op in zijn beroemde catalogus. Door een kleine telescoop verschijnt de nevel als een spookachtige strook licht tegen de sterrenhemel van de Melkweg. Lang geleden wisten waarnemers niet of deze mysterieuze verschijning een gaswolk was of een verafgelegen sterrencluster; de nevel was te zwak om goed te observeren. In 1866 bevestigde William Huggins, met behulp van een nieuw instrument, de astronomische spectrograaf, dat de Omeganevel een gloeiende gaswolk was.
Recentelijk hebben astronomen ontdekt dat de Omeganevel een van de jongste en zwaarste stervorminggebieden in de Melkweg is. Actieve stervorming begon een paar miljoen jaar geleden en gaat door tot de dag van vandaag. Het helder schijnende gas in deze opname is een uitbarstende bel aan de zijkant van een veel grotere donkere wolk van moleculair gas. Het zo prominent aanwezige stof is afkomstig van de restanten van zware, hete sterren, die aan het einde van hun leven zijn en materie uitstoten de ruimte in.
Deze nieuwe opname met het EMMI instrument op ESO’s 3,58 meter New Technology Telescope (NTT) op La Silla in Chili toont het centrale deel van de Omeganevel zeer gedetailleerd. In 2000 maakte SOFI, een ander instrument op de NNT, een opvallend opname van de nevel (ESO Press Photo 24a/00) in het nabij-infrarood, waardoor astronomen door het verduisterende stof konden kijken en de verborgen sterren konden zien. De NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope heeft ook detailopnames van deze nevel gemaakt ( heic0305a and heic0206d).
Links op de opname bedekt een grote, doosvormige stofwolk het gloeiende gas. Het fascinerende palet van subtiele kleurschakeringen in de opname komt doordat verschillende gassen - vooral waterstof, maar ook zuurstof, stikstof en zwavel -gloeien onder het felle ultraviolette licht dat de jonge, hete sterren uitstralen.
