ISAAC e SOFI
In questa foto, due importanti strumenti astronomici equipaggiati con un array di rilevatori a infrarossi all'avanguardia vengono sottoposti a integrazione e test finali presso il laboratorio di assemblaggio presso la sede dell'ESO (Garching, Germania) prima di essere spediti agli osservatori dell'ESO in Cile. È stata scattata pochi giorni dopo una visita in questo laboratorio del Consiglio ESO al momento della riunione del giugno 1997 a Garching. Il più grande in primo piano, ISAAC (Infrared Spectrometer And Array Camera), è destinato al VLT (Very Large Telescope) presso l'Osservatorio del Paranal, dove è attualmente utilizzato per realizzare immagini a infrarossi e spettri a lunghezze d'onda fino a 5 micron (circa sette volte più a lungo di quanto si possa vedere dall'occhio umano). Per la massima sensibilità, il sistema ottico completo è alloggiato in un grande recipiente vuoto visibile nella foto (con un diametro di circa 1,7 m) e raffreddato fino a una temperatura di -200 ° C. Uno dei principali obiettivi scientifici di ISAAC è il rilevamento di galassie lontane e primordiali la cui luce è stata spostata nel rosso nella regione a infrarossi dall'espansione dell'Universo fin dal Big Bang. Lo strumento più piccolo (in background), noto come SOFI, è simile ma è limitato alle lunghezze d'onda infrarosse più corte ed è stato montato sull'NTT (New Technology Telescope) all'Osservatorio ESO di La Silla verso la fine del 1997.
