Le uova dell'aquila
Messier 16 (M16), conosciuta anche come Nebulosa dell'Aquila, e' collocata nella constellazione del sud del Serpens (Serpente).
Usando lo strumento multi-mode ISAAC sul telescopio VLT ANTU di 8.2-m, gli astronomi Europei sono stati capaci di raffigurare la Nebulosa dell'Aquila a vicine lunghezze d'onda e con sensibilita' sufficiente per identificare stelle giovani di tutti i tipi di massa e soprattutto con una limpidezza dell'immagine cosi' buona come 0.35 arcsecondi.
La visuale a campo largo della M16 mostra che tante cose stanno succedendo in questa regione. La prima impressione che ci si fa e' di un enorme numero di stelle. Quelle che sono blu nell'immagine infrarossi sono o membri del giovane insieme NGC 6611 - le cui stelle di grande massa sono concentrate sull'angolo in alto a destra del campo (nord/ovest) - oppure sono stelle in primo piano che sembrano rimanere lungo la linea di visuale verso la M16.
La maggior parte delle stelle sono sfuocate o piu' gialle. Ci sono stelle comuni dietro a M16, lungo la linea di visuale attraverso la perturbanza galattica, e si possono vedere attraverso la nuvola molecolare dalla quale NGC6611 si e' formata. Si possono vedere anche certe stelle molto rosse: queste sono o molto giovani ed immerse in gas e nuvole di polvere, oppure sono soltanto stelle piu' luminose in secondo piano che brillano attraverso esse.
Questa foto e' il risultato di un mosaico composto da tre colori dell'immagine della Nebula dell'Aquila (Messier 16), basata su 144 immagini individuali ottenute con lo strumento infrarosse a multi modalita' ISAAC sull'ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT), presso l'osservatorio di Paranal. Al centro si possono vedere i cosiddetti "Pilastri della Creazione". Questa immagine infrarossi a campo largo mostra non solo i tre pilastri centrali ma anche altri che si trovano nella stessa regione di formazione, cosi' come un grande numero di stelle di fronte, dentro o dietro alla Nebula dell'Aquila. L'insieme di stelle blu luminose nella parte in alto a destra e' il NGC 6611, dimora di stelle molto grandi e calde che illuminano i pilastri.
