Auf diesem Foto befördert Lore, einer der ALMA-Transporter, eine der 7-Meter-Antennenschüsseln von ALMA, dem Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array. Lore und ihr Zwilling Otto sind zwei gelbe 28-rädrige Vehikel, die gebaut wurden um die ALMA-Antennen auf dem Chajnantor-Plateau auf einer Höhe von 5000 Metern zu bewegen. Auf diese Art und Weise wird das Antennenfeld für die optimale Beobachtung eines Himmelsobjekts konfiguriert. Die Transporter bringen die Antennen auch zur Wartung von Chajnantor zur tiefer gelegenen Operations Research Facility.
ALMA besteht aus fünfzig Antennen mit 12 Metern Durchmesser und einem zusätzlichen Antennenfeld mit zwölf 7-Meter Antennen, das man das Atacama Compact Array (ACA) nennt. Lore hat auf diesem Foto eine der kleineren ACA-Antennen mit 7 Metern Durchmesser geladen. Die 12-Meter Antennen des Hauptantennenfelds können nicht näher als 15 Meter nebeneinander stehen, da sie sonst kollidieren würden. Da aber der kleinste Abstand zwischen den Antennen die maximaleGröße von Strukturen begrenzt, die sie am Himmel erfassen können, kann das Hauptantennenfeld die größten Strukturen ausgedehnter Objekte – wie riesige Wolken molekularen Gases in der Milchstraße oder nahe gelegene Galaxien – nicht beobachten. Das ACA wurde speziell konzipiert, um ALMA zu helfen diese ausgedehnten Objekte besser beobachten zu können. Seine kleineren 7-Meter Antennen können näher zusammengerückt werden und ermöglichen so auch die Vermessung größerer Strukturen als das nur mit dem Hauptantennenfeld möglich wäre.
Die auffälligen eisigen Stacheln im Vordergrund sind sogenanntes Büßereis. Dabei handelt es sich um ein kurioses natürliches Phänomen, das man in großer Höhe beobachten lässt, typischerweise auf mehr als 4000 Metern über dem Meeresspiegel. Das Büßereis besteht aus dünnen Schneiden von verhärtetem Schnee oder Eis, die in Richtung der Sonne zeigen und Höhen von einigen Zentimetern bis zu mehreren Metern erreichen.
ALMA ist eine internationale Einrichtung, die gemeinsam von Europa, Nordamerika und Ostasien in Zusammenarbeit mit der Republik Chile getragen wird. Bei Entwicklung, Aufbau und Betrieb des Observatoriums ist die ESO zuständig für den europäischen Beitrag, das National Astronomical Observatory of Japan für Ostasien und das National Radio Astronomy Observatory für den nordamerikanischen Beitrag. Das Joint ALMA Observatory übernimmt die übergreifende Projektleitung für den Aufbau, die Inbetriebnahme und den Beobachtungsbetrieb von ALMA.
