Signature du contrat pour le système d’optique adaptative à étoiles laser MAORY pour l’E-ELT

Un accord a été signé entre l’ESO et un consortium d'instituts européens [1] pour concevoir et construire le système d’optique adaptative MAORY qui sera utilisé à l’E-ELT, le Télescope géant européen.

L’accord a été signé entre Nicolò D'Amico, président de l’Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica (INAF, Italie), au nom du consortium, et Tim de Zeeuw, directeur général de l’ESO, au cours d’une cérémonie qui s’est tenue le 10 décembre 2015 au siège de l’ESO à Garching bei München (Allemagne). Le chercheur responsable de MAORY, Emiliano Diolaiti (INAF), était également présent.

Renato Cianfarani, consul général d’Italie, ainsi que Roberto Tamai, responsable du programme E-ELT à l’ESO, ont aussi assisté à la cérémonie. Ont également participé Paolo Ciliegi (chef de projet MAORY à l’INAF), Philippe Feautrier (chercheur co-responsable de MAORY à l’IPAG), Filippo Maria Zerbi (chef de la Division nationale des programmes au sol à la Direction scientifique de l’INAF), ainsi que Giovanni Fabrizio Bignami, représentant italien au Conseil de l’ESO.

MAORY (de l’anglais Multi-conjugate Adaptive Optics RelaY, module d'optique adaptative multi-conjugué) offrira aux instruments proche infrarouge qui équipent l’E-ELT – comme MICADO, la caméra première génération de l’E-ELT – les techniques d'observation assistées par optique adaptative avec étoiles guide laser.

MAORY analyse avec précision la lumière de six étoiles guides laser artificielles et trois étoiles guides naturelles afin de calculer avec précision les ajustements à apporter aux miroirs déformables situés sur la trajectoire de la lumière entre l’objet céleste et l’instrument scientifique.

En modifiant rapidement mais subtilement la forme des miroirs, on peut neutraliser les effets perturbateurs de l’atmosphère sur les sources astronomiques. Les images reçues par le détecteur sont ainsi beaucoup plus nettes et améliorent notre capacité à observer des détails minuscules sur des objets astronomiques. L’optique adaptative permet également aux astronomes de détecter des sources plus ténues, par exemple des galaxies plus distantes, grâce à une arrivée de lumière plus concentrée sur la caméra. MAORY permettra donc à la caméra haute résolution MICADO d’atteindre ses ambitieux objectifs scientifiques.

Le module MAORY est conçu pour utiliser trois miroirs déformables, dont le miroir quaternaire de 2,4 mètres du télescope géant. Les autres miroirs seront situés à l’intérieur de MAORY lui-même. L’utilisation de plus d’un miroir déformable permet à MAORY de compenser les turbulences des couches atmosphériques à différentes altitudes. Comparé à un système simple d’optique adaptative, ce système offre aux astronomes des images de meilleure qualité tout en observant de plus grands champs.

MAORY s’appuiera sur l’expérience du Démonstrateur d'optique adaptive multi-conjugué (Multi-Conjugate Adaptive Optics Demonstrator, MAD), qui a démontré la faisabilité de la technologie utilisée pour MAORY sur le Très Grand Télescope (Very Large Telescope, VLT) de l’ESO. MAORY s’appuie également sur des travaux de développement menés à l’ESO et dans la communauté astronomique depuis de nombreuses années, ainsi que sur les études menées en ce moment sur le système d’optique adaptative du VLT. Ces recherches permettroni à l’E-ELT de tirer pleinement parti de sa position d’œil le plus puissant scrutant le ciel.
