Euroopan eteläisen observatorion kosmisten jalokivien ohjelma on kuvannut kuolevan tähden viimeistä henkäystä

Kuvassa on planetaarisen sumun ESO 577-24 hiipuva hetki, joka kestää vain noin 10000 vuotta, mikä vastaa tähtitieteellisessä mittakaavassa vain silmänräpäystä. ESO:n 'Very Large Telescope'- kaukoputki on kuvannut hehkuvan ionisoituneen kaasun muodostamaa ulkokuorta. Kuvassa on kuolevan tähden viimeinen henkäys ja sen keskustassa näkyy tähden hiipuvat jäänteet. Tämän planetaarisen sumun laajetessa sen kaasumainen kuori leviää ja samalla himmenee, kunnes se lopulta häviää hitaasti näkyvistä.
Tässä ohikiitävässä hetkessä planetaarisen sumun ESO 577-24 kaasu on leviämässä avaruuteen [1]. Planetaarinen sumu on kuolevan jättiläistähden jäänne, jonka ulko-osat ovat levinneet avaruuteen jättäen jäljelle pienen, mutta hyvin kuuman kääpiötähden. Tämä pieni tähden jäännös vähitellen jäähtyy ja hiipuu pois näkyvistä. Tästä aikoinaan olleesta punaisesta jättiläistähdestä jää jäljelle vain sen pelkkä varjo.
Punaiset jättiläiset ovat elämänsä loppupuolella olevia tähtiä, jotka ovat käyttäneet kaiken ytimissään oleva vedyn ja alkaneet kutistua vetovoivoiman puristuksessa. Punaisen jättiläisen kutistuessa äärimmäinen paine sytyttää ytimen uudelleen, mikä aiheuttaa tähden ulko-osien laajenemisen avaruuteen voimakkaana tähtituulena. Kuolevan tähden hehkuva ydin lähettää voimakasta ultraviolettisäteilyä, mikä ionisoi laajenevat ulkokerrokset ja saa ne loistamaan. Tuloksena on kohde, mitä kutsumme planetaariseksi sumuksi. Tämä on tähden loppuelämän hiipuva jäänne [2].
Tämä häikäisevä planetaarinen sumu löydettiin osana 'National Geographic Society — Palomar Observatory Sky Survey'-taivaan kartoitusta 1950-luvulla ja se löytyy Abellin planetaaristen sumujen luettelosta vuodelta 1966 [3]. 1400 valovuoden etäisyydellä Maasta tämä ESO 577-24:n heikko säteily näkyy ainoastaan suurilla teleskoopeilla. Kääpiötähden jäähtyessä sumu jatkaa laajenemistaan avaruuteen lopulta hiipuen kokonaan pois näkyvistä.
Tämä ESO 577-24:n kuvattiin osana ESO:n kosmisten jalokivien ohjelmaa, mikä on ESO:n teleskooppien ottamien kuvien popularisointihanke mielenkiintoisista, arvoituksellisista ja visuaalisesti näyttävistä kohteista opetuksen ja tieteen popularisoinnin tarpeisiin. Ohjelmassa käytetään sellaista teleskooppiaikaa, mitä ei voida käyttää tieteellisiin havaintoihin. Nämä kuvat tallennetaan ESO:n tieteelliseen arkistoon siltä varalta, jos näitä kuvia käytetään myös tieteellisiin tarkoituksiin myöhemmin tulevaisuudessa.

[1] Planetaarisia sumuja havaittiin ensimmäistä kertaa 1700-luvulla. Silloisille tähtitieteilijöille niistä tuleva himmeä valon hehku ja selkeät ääriviivat muistuttivat aurinkokunnan planeettoja. [2] Pitkän ajan kuluttua tähtemme Aurinko kehittyy punaiseksi jättiläiseksi, kun se on saavuttanut kypsän 10 miljardin vuoden iän. Syytä paniikkiin ei kuitenkaan ole, sillä Aurinko on nyt vain noin viiden miljardin vuoden ikäinen.
[3] Tähtitieteen kohteilla on yleensä useita virallisia nimiä, jotka liittyvät eri katalogeihin. Tämän kohteen virallinen nimi Abellin planetaaristen sumujen luettelossa on PN A66 36.

ESO:lla on Chilessä kolme ainutlaatuista huippuluokan observatoriota: La Silla, Paranal ja Chajnantor. ESO:lla on Paranalilla VLT-teleskooppi (Very Large Telescope) ja siihen liittyvä, maailmanlaajuisesti johtava VLTI-interferometri, sekä kaksi kartoitusteleskooppia. VISTA toimii infrapuna-alueella ja VST-teleskooppi näkyvän valon aallonpituuksilla. Paranalilla ESO tulee myös hallinnoimaan ja operoimaan eteläistä Tšerenkov-teleskooppien verkostoa (Cherenkov Telescope Array South), mikä on maailman suurin ja herkin gammasäteilyä havainnoiva observatorio. ESO on myös merkittävä kumppani kahdessa Chajnantorin laitteistossa, APEX-teleskoopissa ja ALMA-teleskoopissa, joka on maailman suurin tähtitieteellinen projekti. Lähellä Paranalia sijaitsevalla Cerro Armazonesilla ESO rakentaa 39-metrin kokoista ELT-teleskooppia (Extremely Large Telescope), josta tulee “maailman suurin tähtitaivasta havainnoiva silmä”.
