Espanjan kruununprinssi vierailee ESO:n Paranalin observatoriolla

Heidän kuninkaalliset korkeutensa, Asturian ruhtinas ja ruhtinatar kunnioittivat ESO:n Paranalin observatoriota Chilessä vierailullaan 24. marraskuuta 2011.
Espanjan tiede- ja innovaatioministeri, tri Cristina Garmendia, Chilen ulkoasiainministeri Alfredo Moreno ja Chilen valtionomaisuuden ministeri Catalina Parot täydensivät delegaatiota, joka pääsi ensin kuulemaan sarjan ESO:a käsitteleviä esitelmiä Paranalin observatorion majoitusrakennuksessa. Tätä tapahtumaa seurasi myös kansainvälisen lehdistön edustajia.
ESO:n pääjohtaja, prof. Tim de Zeeuw, korosti haasteita, jotka liittyvät tähtitieteellisten huippututkimuslaitosten rakentamiseen ja käyttöön maailman kuivimpiin kuuluvassa paikassa.
"On suuri ilo toivottaa teidän kuninkaalliset korkeutenne Paranalin observatoriolle", sanoi prof. de Zeeuw, "Espanja on ESO:n suuresti arvostama jäsenvaltio. Espanjan teollisuus on tehnyt suuren panoksen ESO:n tutkimuslaitteiden suunnittelussa ja rakentamisessa, ja espanjalaiset tähtitieteilijät hyödyntävät merkittävästi näitä maailman johtavia tieteellisiä työkaluja."
Espanjan valtuuskunnan jäsen ja ESO:n johtokunnan varapuheenjohtaja, prof. Xavier Barcons, painotti edelleen Espanjan tiedeyhteisön vahvaa osallistumista ESO:n toimintoihin. Espanja on ottanut merkittävän roolin tulevan E-ELT -teleskoopin suunnittelussa ja sille on myös myönnetty huomattavia sopimuksia ALMA:n (Atacama Large Millimetre/submillimetre Array) rakentamisessa.
Espanjalainen tähtitieteilijä ja ESO:n varatoiminnanjohtaja, tri Fernando Comerón, kuvaili joitakin tärkeimmistä ESO:n VLT-teleskoopilla tehdyistä havainnoista, mukaanlukien kautta aikojen ensimmäinen suora havainto eksoplaneetasta ja Linnunradan keskustan supermassiivisen mustan aukon olemassaolon vahvistaminen.
Ruhtinaalle ja ruhtinattarelle näytettiin sitten itse VLT, maailman kehittynein optinen havaintolaite. He saivat myös harvinaisen mahdollisuuden vierailla teleskooppien alla olevissa interferometriatunneleissa. Näissä tunneleissa VLT:n yksikköteleskooppien keräämät valonsäteet yhdistetään, mikä mahdollistaa tähtitieteilijöiden nähdä 17 kertaa tarkempia yksityiskohtia kuin olisi mahdollista yksittäisellä teleskoopilla.
Arvostetuille vierailijoille esiteltiin myös VLT:n kontrollihuone, missä ESO:n espanjalaiset tähtitieteilijät selittivät teleskooppien toimintaa.
Asturian ruhtinaan ja ruhtinattaren vierailua isännöivät myös ESO:n edustaja Chilessä, prof. Massimo Tarenghi ja observatorion johtaja tri Andreas Kaufer.
Espanja liittyi ESO:on vuonna 2006 ja tällä hetkellä organisaatiossa työskentelee 32 Espanjan kansalaista.

ESO, Euroopan eteläinen observatorio, on Euroopan johtava hallitustenvälinen tähtitieteen organisaatio ja maailman tieteellisesti tuotteliain tähtitieteellinen observatorio. ESO:lla on 15 jäsenmaata: Alankomaat, Belgia, Brasilia, Espanja, Iso-Britannia, Italia, Itävalta, Portugali, Ranska, Ruotsi, Saksa, Suomi, Sveitsi, Tanska ja Tšekin tasavalta. ESO toteuttaa kunnianhimoista ohjelmaa, joka keskittyy tehokkaiden maanpäällisten havaintovälineiden suunnitteluun, rakentamiseen ja käyttöön. Välineiden avulla tähtitieteilijät voivat tehdä merkittäviä tieteellisiä löytöjä. ESO:lla on myös johtava asema tähtitieteen tutkimuksen kansainvälisen yhteistyön edistämisessä ja organisoinnissa. ESO:lla on Chilessä kolme ainutlaatuista huippuluokan observatoriota: La Silla, Paranal ja Chajnantor. ESO:lla on Paranalilla Very Large Telescope (VLT), maailman kehittynein näkyvää valoa havainnoiva tähtitieteellinen observatorio, ja kaksi kartoitusteleskooppia. VISTA toimii infrapuna-alueella ja on maailman suurin kartoitusteleskooppi. VLT Survey Telescope on suurin vartavasten taivaan näkyvän valon kartoitukseen suunniteltu teleskooppi. ESO on maailman suurimman tähtitieteellisen projektin, vallankumouksellisen ALMA-teleskoopin eurooppalainen yhteistyökumppani. Parhaillaan ESO suunnittelee 40-metrin kokoluokan optisen/lähi-infrapuna-alueen European Extremely Large -teleskooppia (E-ELT) josta tulee “maailman suurin tähtitaivasta havainnoiva silmä”.
