Messier 87 ESO:n VLT-kaukoputkella kuvattuna
Messier 87 (M87) on valtava elliptinen galaksi, joka sijaitsee noin 55 miljoonan valovuoden päässä Maasta ja sijaitsee Neitsyen tähdistössä. Charles Messier löysi sen vuonna 1781, mutta se tunnistettiin galaksiksi vasta 1900-luvulla. Sen massa on kaksinkertainen oman galaksimme Linnunradan massaan verrattuna, ja siinä on jopa kymmenen kertaa enemmän tähtiä. Galaksi on läheisistä galakseista suurimpia. Pelkän kokonsa lisäksi M87:llä on hyvin ainutlaatuisia ominaisuuksia. Sillä on esimerkiksi poikkeuksellisen paljon pallomaisia tähtijoukkoja. Linnunradallamme niitä on alle 200, mutta M87:llä niitä on noin 12 000, minkä jotkut tutkijat arvelevat johtuvan siitä, että se on kerännyt ne pienemmiltä naapureiltaan.
Aivan kuten kaikilla muillakin suurilla galakseilla M87:n keskellä on supermassiivinen musta aukko. Galaksin keskustan mustan aukon massa liittyy koko galaksin massaan, joten ei pitäisi olla yllättävää, että M87:n musta aukko on yksi massiivisimmista tunnetuista aukoista. Musta aukko voi myös selittää yhden galaksin energisimmistä piirteistä, eli relativistisen suihkun, joka sinkoutuu ulos lähes valon nopeudella.
Musta aukko oli Event Horizon Telescope havaintolaitteen tekemien mullistavien havaintojen kohteena. Kohde valikoitui EHT:n havaintojen kohteeksi kahdesta syystä. Vaikka EHT:n erotuskyky on uskomaton, niin silläkin on rajansa. Koska massiiviset mustat aukot ovat myös halkaisijaltaan suurempia, niin M87:n keskustan musta aukko oli poikkeuksellisen suuri kohde. Tämä tarkoittaa sitä, että se voitaisiin kuvata helpommin kuin lähempänä olevat pienemmät mustat aukot. Toinen syy sen valintaan oli kuitenkin selvästi tavallisempi. Planeetaltamme katsottuna M87 on melko lähellä taivaan ekvaattoria, minkä ansiosta se näkyy suurimmalla osalla pohjoista ja eteläistä pallonpuoliskoa. Tämä maksimoi EHT:n käytettävissä olevien havaintolaitteiden määrän, jotka voisivat tarkkailla sitä lisäten lopullisen kuvan resoluutiota.
Kuva on otettu ESO:n Very Large Telescope, eli VLT:n FORS2-instrumentilla osana Cosmic Gems-ohjelmaa, joka on tieteen näkyvyyden edistämiseksi tehty aloite, jossa ESO:n teleskoopit ottavat kuvia kiinnostavista, kiehtovista tai visuaalisesti näyttävistä kohteista koulutuksen ja yleisön tavoittamiseksi. Ohjelma hyödyntää teleskooppiaikaa, jota ei voi käyttää tieteellisiin havainnointiin, ja sen avulla saadaan otettua henkeäsalpaavia kuvia joistakin yötaivaan upeimmista kohteista. Jos kerätystä datasta voi olla hyötyä myös tulevissa tieteellisissä tarkoituksissa, havainnot tallennetaan ja saatetaan tähtitieteilijöiden saataville ESO:n tiedearkiston kautta.
