METIS-instrumentin kehitys on saavuttanut merkittävän vaiheen

ESO:n Extremely Large Telescope eli ELT-kaukoputken tehokas kamera ja spektrografi METIS on läpäissyt suunnitelmien alustavan arvion, joka tehtiin ESO:n pääkonttorissa Garchingissa Saksassa. METIS (Mid-infrared ELT Imager and Spectrograph) tulee hyödyntämään täysimittaisesti kaukoputken jättimäistä pääpeiliä ja sen avulla tullaan tutkimaan useita eri kohteita aurinkokunnan kappaleista kaukaisiin aktiivisiin galakseihin. METIS soveltuu erittäin hyvin tähtien elinkaarien tutkimiseen, vasta syntyneistä tähdistä planeettoja muodostaviin kiekkoihin ja edelleen kaikkein vanhempiin tähtiin lähellä elinkaarensa loppua.
ELT tulee olemaan maailman suurin optisen ja keski-infrapuna alueen teleskooppi, kun se aloittaa toimintansa tämän vuosikymmenen puolivälissä. Sen 39-metrin halkaisijan omaavalla pääpeilillä ja kehittyneellä adaptiivisen optiikan järjestelmällä sen resoluutio on kuusi kertaa parempi, kuin James Webb-avaruusteleskoopin resoluutio. METIS tulee hyödyntämään täysimääräisesti tätä huippukaukoputkea ja sen adaptiivista optiikkaa tutkiakseen eri kohteiden rakennetta ja koostumusta erittäin suurella tarkkuudella.
METIS:in odotetaan antavan merkittävästi uutta tietoa esimerkiksi eksoplaneetoista, joiden tutkimus on yksi dynaamisimmista ja jännittävimmistä tähtitieteen aloista. Instrumentin avulla pystytään tutkimaan usean jättimäisen eksoplaneetan ilmakehän lämpötilaa, säätä ja kausittaisia muutoksia. Tämän lisäksi METIS pystyy havaitsemaan suoraan lähimpien tähtien ympärillä olevat maankaltaiset eksoplaneetat ja suotuisissa tapauksissa tutkimaan niiden kaasukehän koostumusta.
Nyt kun instrumentti on läpäissyt alustavan suunnittelukatsauksen, METIS konsortio jatkaa yksityiskohtaisemmalla suunnittelulla ennen laitteen rakentamisen aloittamista.
