ELT:n MICADO-instrumentti läpäisi alustavan suunnitteluvaiheen arvioinnin

MICADO on ensimmäinen ESO:n Extremely Large Telescope eli ELT-kaukoputkeen tuleva kuvauslaitteisto ja se on nyt saavuttanut tärkeän vaiheen sen suunnittelun arvioinnissa. MICADO konsortio ja ulkopuolisia eksperttejä ympäri maailman tapasivat toisensa ESO:n päämajassa Garchingissa viikon ajan, jolloin instrumentin optiikkaa, mekaniikkaa, ohjelmistoa, elektroniikkaa ja kustannuksia tarkasteltiin kriittisesti ja etsittiin niitä osa-alueita, joiden suunnittelu vaatii vielä työtä. Kokouksen jälkeen MICADO-ryhmä huomioi kaikki keskeiset huolenaiheet, jotka arvioinnin aikana tuotiin esille. Instrumentti on nyt muodollisesti läpäissyt alustavan suunnittelun arvioinnin. Yksityiskohtaisempi suunnitteluvaihe on nyt käynnissä ja se tulee johtamaan loppulliseen suunnitelmien arviointiin, sekä instrumentin useiden eri komponenttien rakentamiseen.
MICADO (Multi-Adaptive Optics Imaging Camera for Deep Observations) on suunniteltu tekemään sekä kuvantamista, että spektroskopiaa ja se tulee keskittymään lähi-infrapunaisen alueen kuvantamiseen ja spektroskopiaan ennennäkemättömällä herkkyydellä ja tarkkuudella. Ilmakehän aiheuttaman kuvan epäterävyyden kompensoimiseksi MICADO tulee käyttämään kahta eri adaptiivisen optiikan systeemiä. Toisessa hyödynnetään teleskoopin muotoaan muuttavaa M4 peiliä, jolloin saadaan tarkkoja kuvia pieneltä näkökentältä. Toinen menetelmä käyttää MAORY:n adaptiivisen optiikan moduulin kaikkia mahdollisuuksia, jolloin saavutetaan laajempi kuvakenttä.
MICADO pystyy havaitsemaan useita erityyppisiä kohteita ja sen kyvyt spektroskopiaan tulevat merkittävästi lisäämään ymmärrystämme eri kohteiden koostumuksesta. Instrumentin avulla pystytään selvittämään tähtitieteen haastavimpia kysymyksiä esimerkiksi siitä, miten eksoplaneetat muodostuvat, miten galaksien keskustoissa olevat mustat aukot vaikuttavat omiin galakseihinsa, sekä miten Universumi on kehittynyt ajan kuluessa.
