ESO pitää positionsa maailman tuottavimpana maanpäällisenä observatoriona

2018 oli hyvä vuosi tutkimukselle ESO:ssa, johtaen ESO:n pitämään paikkansa maailman tuottavimpana observatoriona. ESO:n observatoriot jatkavat riman asettamista tähtitieteellisessä tutkimuksessa ja vuonna 2018 ESO:n 1093 julkaisua ylitti kaikki tuottavuusluvut verrattuna yhteenkään maanpäälliseen tai avaruudessa olevaan observatorioon.
Suurin vaikuttaja tällä saavutukselle oli ESO:n lippulaiva havaintoasema VLT (Very Large Telescope / VLTI (Very Large Telescope Interferometer), joka sijaitsee Paranalissa. Yhteensä 618 paperia julkaistiin käyttäen dataa VLT:sta vuonna 2018. Kaikista tuottavin instrumentti tänä vuonna oli UVES 139 julkaisun kanssa, jonka kannoilla olivat myös X-shooter, MUSE ja FORS2.
Muilla teleskoopeilla Paranalilla oli myös huomattava vaikutus ESO:n tutkimustuloksiin vuonna 2018, erityisesti VST (VLT Survey Telescope) ja VISTA (Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy). VST:n havaintoja käytettiin 48:ssa tutkimuspaperissa ja VISTA:n havaintoja 105:ssa tutkimuspaperissa.
ESO:n teleskoopit La Silla Observatoriolla jatkoivat tuottavuuttaan, tuoden dataa 236 tutkimuspaperiin vuonna 2018. La Sillan havaintoasemista erottui eksoplaneettojen metsästäjä HARPS, joka oli mukana yli puolessa La Sillan julkaisuista (120). HARPS:in julkaisujen määrä nousee joka vuosi näyttäen sillä olevan erityinen asema mielenkiintoisen ja nopeasti kehittyvän eksoplaneettojen tutkimisen alalla.
ALMA ja APEX [1] [2] observatoriot tuottivat myös vaikuttavan määrän tutkimuspapereita, joissa ESO on tärkeänä jäsenenä. Vuonna 2018 tutkimusten julkaisujen määrä perustuen eurooppalaisten havaintoaikoihin ALMA:lla nousi 24% verrattuna vuoteen 2017, johtaen 189 uuden tutkimuksen julkaisuun. Eurooppalaisten havainnot ALMA:lla ovat johtaneet jo vuodesta 2012 saakka yhteensä 650 tutkimuspaperin julkaisuun. APEX jatkaa positiotaan tuottavan observatoriona – 78 julkaistua paperia vuonna 2018 johti APEX:in kokonaisjulkaisujen määrän nousevan 680:n tasolle aina vuodesta 2006 lähtien.
Kun nämä edellä mainitut faktat yhdistetään, niin näkyy selvästi että ESO on tähtitieteen tutkimuksen etulinjassa. Vaikkakin vertailut voivat olla monimutkaisia observatorioiden käyttäessä erilaisia metodeja laskeakseen tutkimuksellista tuotantoaan, on ESO silti maailman tuottavin observatorio.
Nämä saavutukset korostavat ESO:n suurta osuutta tähtitieteen tutkimuksessa ja ne antavat idean paljonko tutkimusta tehdään eri havaintoasemilla.
Luvut julkaistaan vuotuisessa Basic ESO Publication Statistics [3], jonka julkaisijana toimii ESO’s Library and Information Centre. Statistiikka lasketaan ESO Telescope Bibliography:lla (telbib), joka on tietokanta sisältäen vertaisarvioidut tutkimuspaperit, jotka käyttävät ESO:n dataa [4]. ESO panostaa suuresti identifioidakseen kaikki ESO:n dataa käyttäneet vertaisarvioidut tutkimuspaperit, jotta telbib olisi aina ajan tasalla ja valmis tietokanta.
Interaktiiviset kaaviot vapaasti valittavista statiikoista ovat saatavilla netissä [5]. Nämä kaaviot näyttävät koko telbib -tietokannan sisältäen asiakirjat julkaisuista lähtien aina vuodesta 1996 tähän päivään saakka. Kaavioita voidaan käyttää monipuolisesti tutkiakseen mm. tutkimuspapereiden kehitystä käyttäen dataa ESO:n instrumenteistä ja muusta arkistoidusta tiedosta.

Julkaisut pohjautuvat dataan kaikista ALMA:n jäsenistä jotka ovat tallennettuna telbib:iin, mutta ainoastaan ne jotka pohjautuvat ESO:n havaintoaikaan ovat laskettuna ESO:n statistikkaan, jos ei muuten ole mainittu.
[2] APEX on yhteistyö Max Planck Institute of Radio Astronomy:n, the Onsala Space Observatory:n ja ESO:n välillä ja sitä operoi ESO lähellä ALMA:a Chajnantor tasangolla Chilessä, Atacaman alueella.
Julkaisut pohjautuvat kaikista APEX:in jäsenistä tallennettuna telbib:iin, mutta ainoastaan ne jotka pohjautuvat ESO:n havaintoaikaan ovat laskettuna ESO:n statistikkaan, jos ei muuten ole mainittu.
