Højt Oppe
ESOs Very Large Telescope (VLT) ligner mere et meget lille teleskop på det her billede. Det er svært på den afstand at se omridsene af VLTs fire 8,2 meterteleskoper på toppen af Cerro Paranal i Chiles Atacamaørken.
Stedet for VLT er omhyggeligt udvalgt. Det er yderst vigtigt, at her er så tørt som muligt, for vanddamp i atmosfæren absorberer infrarødt lys, og det gør observationerne dårligere. Atmosfærens indvirkning er gjort så lille som muligt ved at anbringe observatoriet i 2600 meters højde, hvor teleskoperne kun skal kigge ud igennem en mindre mængde luft.
Paranal er stort set uforstyrret, fordi stedet ligger langt væk fra alting. Lysforureningen mindskes også ved kun at montere svagt lys på vejene igennem ørkenområdet
På billedet er der et spor af stjerner, som skærer op over nattehimlen som røg fra en himmelhøj skorsten. Det er vores hjemgalakse, e Mælkevejen. Op imod toppen af billedet bliver den bredere og klarere. Det er den centrale udbuling - The Central Bulge - som udgør Mælkevejens centralområde.
