Komet Lovejoy på besøg over La Silla
Der er en usædvanlig tourist på besøg over ESOs La Silla Observatorium på det her flotte vidvinkelfotografi. Billedet er taget i januar 2015 af ESOs Photo Ambassador Petr Horálek. Gæsten er Comet C/2014 Q2 (Lovejoy), som ser ud til at række hen over himlen (til venstre for midten), på vej hen over de to teleskoper på bjerget: ESOs 3,6-meter teleskop (til venstre) og det svenske og ESOs Submillimetre Telescope (SEST).
Som de fleste andre kometer har komet Lovejoy en aflang elliptisk og excentrisk bane omkring Solen. Kometen blev for første gang observeret i det indre af Solsystemet i 2014, og den var i perihelion - det sted i rummet, hvor den er tættest på Solen - den 30. januar 2015. Gennemsnitsafstanden imellem Jorden og Solen er defineret til 1 astronomisk enhed (1 au), og det er 149,6 millioner kilometer. Komet Lovejoy kom så tæt på vores stjerne som 1,29 au, så den var i perihel et sted imellem Jordens og Mars baner.
Billedet viser det karakteristiske bløde grønne skær fra kometens coma. Det stammer fra kulmolekyler, som opvarmes af sollyset. Ud bag kometkernen inde i comaen spreder der sig en hale af stof. Det er gasarter og støv, som bliver blæst væk fra kometen af den vind af ladede partikler, som strømmer ud fra Solen.
Denne komet er den femte, som er opdaget af amatørastronomen Terry Lovejoy fra Queensland i Australien. Tidligere har han opdaget kometerne med betegnelserne C/2007 E2, C/2007 K5, C/2011 W3, and C/2013 R1. En komet får traditionelt både en katalogbetegnelse som disse, og så navnet på opdageren eller det automatiske teleskopsystem, som registrerer kometen første gang.
