APEX står vagt på Chajnantor
Atacama Pathfinder Experiment (APEX) teleskopet kigger mod himlen en måneoplyst nat på Chajnantor, et af de højeste og tørreste observationssteder i verden. Astronomiske skatte fylder himlen over teleskopet, et bevis på de enestående forhold, der er på dette sted i Chiles Atacama-region.
Til venstre skinner stjernerne, der udgør halen af stjernebilledet Scorpius (Skorpionen). Skorpionens ”brod” udgøres af de to klare stjerner, der er særligt tæt på hinanden. Liggende henover himlen, som et bånd af svage glødende skyer, ses Mælkevejens bånd.
Mellem Scorpius og det næste stjernebilledet til højre, Sagittarius (Skytten), der toner frem over APEX’ parabol, ses tydeligt en glitrende stjernehob. Det er den åbne hob Messier 7, der også er kendt som Ptolemæus’ hob. Under Messier 7 og lidt til højre ses Sommerfugle-hoben, Messier 6. Længere til højre, lige over kanten af APEX’ parabol, ses en lyssvag sky, der ligner en lys tågeklat. Det er den berømte Lagunetåge (se eso0936 for et nærbillede).
Med en primær parabol på 12 meter er APEX det største enkelt-parabol submillimeter-bølgelængde teleskop, der er i drift på den sydlige halvkugle. Som teleskopets navn antyder, baner det vejen for det største submillimeter-observatorium i verden, Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), som vil stå færdigt i 2013 (eso1137). APEX vil dele pladsen på den 5000 meter høje Chajnantor-højslette i Chile med ALMAs 66 antenner. APEX-teleskopet er baseret på en prototype-antenne konstrueret til ALMA-projektet, og det vil finde mange objekter, som ALMA vil være i stand til at studere i stor detalje.

Babak er også grundlægger af The World At Night, et projekt, der vil skabe og udstille en samling af fantastiske billeder og tidsforkortede videoer af verdens smukkeste og historiske steder set mod en natlig baggrund af stjerner, planeter og astronomiske begivenheder.

APEX er et samarbejde mellem Max-Planck Institut für Radioastronomie (MPIfR), Onsala Space Observatory (OSO) og ESO. Driften af teleskopet er overdraget til ESO.
ALMA, en international astronomifacilitet, er et partnerskab mellem Europa, Nordamerika og Østasien i samarbejde med Chile. Konstruktionen og driften af ALMA ledes i Europa af ESO, i Nordamerika af National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) og i Østasien af National Astronomical Oberservatory of Japan (NAOJ). Joint ALMA Observatory (JAO) står for den samlede ledelse og overordnede styring af konstruktionen, ibrugtagningen og driften af ALMA.
