ESO underskriver aftale med UN Women og fejrer International Day of Women and Girls in Science

I dag er det International Day for Woman and Girls in Science, og i den anledning fremhæver vi nogle af de skridt, ESO har taget hen imod mangfoldighed og inklusion, og hvordan organisationen fejrer denne særlige dag.
ESO og UN Women underskrev en såkaldt Memorandum of Understanding (et aftalememorandum) den 30. januar 2020 hos ESO i Santiago, Chile. Med aftalen understreger ESO forpligtelsen til at fremme ligestilling, mangfoldighed og inklusion, og sammen med UN Women Chile vil ESO fremme forsknings- og ingeniørmuligheder for unge kvinder i Chile og lave uddannelsesmuligheder for dårligt stillede kvinder, som kæmper for at gøre deres formelle uddannelse færdig. Derudover vil ESO bruge Woman Empowerment Priciples som pejlemærker til at strukturere og måle udviklingen i mangfoldighed og inklusionshandlinger.
Aftalen blev underskrevet af María Noel Vaeza, der er Regional Director for UN Women i Amerika og Caribien, og ESO’s Director General Xavier Barcons foran UN Women og ESO medarbejdere, som er involveret i implementeringen af aftalen.
Den 7. og 14. februar præsenterer vi en række interviews med kvindelige ESO-medarbejdere på ESOblog for at fejre kvinder i ESO og fremvise deres arbejde. De spænder vidt med forskellige roller inden for ingeniørvidenskab, teleskopbemanding og astronomisk forskning, og vi håber, de kan inspirere unge kvinder og piger til at forfølge en karriere inden for forskning, teknologi eller ingeniørvidenskab.
ESO er stolt af at deltage i EIROforum-fejringen af International Day of Women and Girls in Science med kvindelige videnskabsfolk, fysikere og ingeniører. EIROforum (European Intergovernmental Research Organisation forum) samler otte af de største europæiske forskningsorganisationer, blandt andre ESO.
Internt har ESO taget flere skridt hen imod større mangfoldighed og ligestilling. I 2017 blev en komite, Diversity and Inclusion Commitee, oprettet for at fremme mangfoldighed hos ESO og inden for det bredere astronomiske samfund. Nogle af de foranstaltninger, komiteen har iværksat, handler om analyser af rekrutteringsprocedurerne hos ESO og om uddannelsen af udvælgelsesudvalgene. Derudover har komiteen igangsat en række foredrag om mangfoldighed og inklusion og har inviteret forskere fra alle områder og baggrund til at præsentere deres emner. Medlemmer af komiteen har arrangeret en række events for ESO’s medarbejdere for at fejre kvinder i forskning i denne uge. Det skal fremme værdien af dagen og støtte kvinderne hos ESO.
Derudover er ESO vært for et offentligt foredrag, organiseret af det nærliggende Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics (MPE), hos ESO Supernova Planetarium & Visitor Centre.
