BlackGEM Teleskopet får plads på ESOs La Sillaobservatorium

Nytænkning af teleskop, som skal følge op på graviationsbølger

ESO og et internationalt konsortium af institutioner[1] har underskrevet en aftale, som sikrer at det planlagte teleskopkompleks BlackGEM bliver opstillet på ESOs La Sillaobservatorium i Chile. BlackGEM skal være med til at studere sorte huller og neutronstjerner, som smelter sammen, og aftalen med ESO sikrer, at det nye spændende teleskopkompleks får udbytte af et af de bedste observationssteder og den understøttende infrastruktur i Verden.

BlackGEM komplekset kommer til en start til at bestå af 3 sammenkoblede teleskoper. Målet er at udvide antallet i komplekset til 15, og det bliver et frontlinieprojekt i observationsastronomien. Anlægget kommer til at bidrage til udforskningen af nogle af de voldsomste og energirigeste hændelser i Universet; nemlig neutronstjerner og sorte huller, som smelter sammen. BlackGEM kommer til at søge efter disse hændelser i synligt lys, som opfølgning af observationer af de karakteristiske tyngdebølger, som opstår ved sammensmeltningen af sådan nogle eksotiske objekter. Selve tyngdebølgerne, som er ujævnheder i selve rumtidens struktur, har forskerne allerede fundet med den nye generation af tyngdebølgedetektorer, Advanced LIGO og Advanced Virgo. Hvis BlackGEM får held til at opdage et kortvarigt glimt i synligt lys, vil det være muligt med stor præcision at bestemme retningen til de kilder, som er ophav til tyngdebølgerne, så større teleskoper kan nå at udføre mere detaljerede observationer. Det vil give astronomerne en hidtil uset indsigt i nogle af de mest ekstreme hændelser i Universet.

BlackGEM vil også kunne fungere som et meget effektivt oversigtsteleskop, og en del af observationstiden vil blive brugt til at gennemsøge den sydlige himmelhalvkugle. Desuden vil man kunne studere nogle af de korttidsfænomener i detaljer, som ikke er relateret til tyngdekraftsbølger. Det kan for eksempel være kortperiodiske variable, som måske er forløbere for neutronstjerner og sorte huller, som er på nippet til at smelte sammen. Detaljerede oversigtsarbejder giver astronomerne statistiske oplysninger om hyppigheden og fordelingen af objekter på himlen, og det gør det muligt for eksempel at studere, hvodan galakserne har udviklet sig fra det tidlige Univers og til nu.

Paul Groot, som er hovedansvarlig forsker for BlackGEM projektet, siger: "Jeg er meget glad for, at BlackGEM teleskopet bliver opstillet på ESOs observatorium på La Silla. Det er et af de bedste observationssteder i Verden. Det, at man for nyligt har registreret tyngdebølger fra par af sorte huller, som smelter sammen, har gjort BlackGEM projektet endnu mere vigtigt. Vi får endnu bedre muligheder for at studere de fænomener, som forårsager tyngdebølger, så vi ser frem til at få et endnu mere detaljeret billede af nogle af naturens mest voldsomme hændelser".
