Kontrakterne for spejlunderstøtningen til ESOs nye kæmpeteleskop E-ELT er nu i orden

ESO har underskrevet parallelle kontrakter med CESA (i Spanien) og VDL (Nederlandene) angående design og fremstilling af en forproduktion [1] til de spejlunderstøtninger og tilbehør, som skal bruges til hovedspejlet til European Extremely Large Telescope E- ELT. Tidligere er der fremstillet udviklingsmodeller som prototyper, og de er blevet grundigt afprøvet i ESOs hovedkvarter.
E-ELTs hovedspejl bliver 39 meter i diameter, og spejloverfladen kommer til at bestå af 798 sekskantede spejle, plus udskiftningssæt, så der i alt bliver fremstillet 931 spejle. Det, at der bruges sekskantede spejle betyder, at ens understøtning kan anvendes til dem alle. Kontrakterne omfatter detaljerede instruktioner og konstruktionstegninger, som skal anvendes i selve produktionen. Desuden omfatter de udvikling af de nødvendige procedurer til at samle understøtningerne og spejlene, til at håndtere og transportere de samlede dele og til at bruge og vedligeholde dem.
Til en start løber kontrakterne med CESA og VDL i 30 måneder. De omfatter også indledende og senere detaljerede designfaser, og derefter produktionen og afprøvningen af forproduktionen. Hver kontrakt omfatter fire modeller. Når denne del af projektet slutter, men før serieproduktionen begynder, bliver modellerne afprøvet i ESOs særligt indrettede teststand.
Første lys til E-ELT forventes at ske i 2024. Herefter kan teleskopet bruges til at tage fat på vor tids største astronomiske udfordringer. Kæmpeteleskopet vil give mulighed for udforskningen af helt ukendte dele af Universet – det bliver ”Verdens største himmeløje”.
