Los 4MOST fantásticos
Muy pronto, 4MOST (4-metre Multi-Object Spectroscopic Telescope, telescopio espectroscópico multi-objeto de 4 metros) se unirá a la creciente familia de instrumentos de ESO. Para esta Imagen de la Semana, 4MOST muestra su especial habilidad para controlar cada una de sus 2436 fibras ópticas individualmente, creando el contorno de un conocido logotipo que recuerda a cierta familia de superhéroes...
Al igual que los Cuatro Fantásticos, todas las fibras de 4MOST funcionan perfectamente coordinadas para hacer el trabajo. Su superpoder reside en su capacidad de observar muchos objetos diferentes simultáneamente, con cada pequeña fibra capaz de recoger la luz de una fuente astronómica diferente. A continuación, esta luz se dividirá en sus colores constituyentes para obtener un espectro, que puede proporcionar a la comunidad astronómica información sobre la composición química de un objeto, su velocidad o su distancia, entre otras propiedades. Durante un estudio planificado de 5 años, se espera que 4MOST capte espectros de más de 25 millones de fuentes diferentes repartidas en un área superior a 60.000 lunas llenas.
Al contar con numerosos telescopios terrestres y espaciales que proporcionan la ubicación de millones de fuentes astronómicas, los espectros captados por 4MOST serán esenciales para comprender completamente sus propiedades físicas. 4MOST ayudará a la comunidad astronómica a descifrar cómo se formó nuestra galaxia mediante el estudio cuidadoso de las estrellas que contiene. También buscará galaxias lejanas más distantes, rastreando cómo evolucionan y estudiando los efectos de los agujeros negros supermasivos que hay en sus núcleos. Las observaciones de 4MOST pueden incluso ayudar a arrojar luz sobre la materia oscura oculta en todo nuestro Universo.
El consorcio responsable de 4MOST, liderado por el Instituto Leibniz de Astrofísica de Potsdam (AIP), está trabajando actualmente, junto con el personal de ESO, para instalar el instrumento en el telescopio VISTA (Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy, telescopio de sondeo visible e infrarrojo para astronomía) de ESO, en el Observatorio Paranal en Chile.
