Caída desde las estrellas
Un meteoroide ilumina el cielo nocturno de Paranal, en el desierto chileno, mientras tres Unidades de Telescopio y un Telescopio Auxiliar del VLT (Very Large Telescope) de ESO presencian el final de su viaje a través del Sistema Solar como una impresionante ráfaga de luz.
Más pequeños que los asteroides, los meteoroides son objetos rocosos que vagan por el espacio. Cuando entran en la atmósfera de la Tierra, se calientan y se vaporizan debido a la fricción con el aire, dejando una huella luminosa en el cielo conocida como estrella fugaz (o meteoro). Los restos de un meteoroide que no se vaporizan por completo y llegan al suelo se denominan meteorito.
El color de la huella luminosa revela la composición química del meteoroide que la dejó. Las luces verdes y amarillas indican la presencia de magnesio y hierro, respectivamente. El resplandor rojo difuso a través del cielo es emitido por el oxígeno y el nitrógeno de la atmósfera de la Tierra.
El VLT de ESO es la instalación óptica más avanzada del mundo. Está formado por cuatro Unidades de Telescopio y cuatro Telescopios Auxiliares móviles. Los telescopios auxiliares trabajan juntos en lo que se denomina VLTI (Very Large Telescope Interferometer, interferómetro del VLT), que combina la luz recogida por cada telescopio, permitiendo a los astrónomos sondear el cosmos con un mayor nivel de detalle. Mientras que las Unidades de Telescopio funcionan como sistemas independientes la mayor parte del tiempo, su luz también se puede combinar en el VLTI. Algunos ejemplos de los hitos científicos alcanzados gracias al VLT son la primera imagen de un planeta extrasolar y el seguimiento de las estrellas individuales que orbitan el agujero negro supermasivo que acecha en el centro de nuestra galaxia.
