NGC 6902 captada por SPECULOOS
Esta Imagen de la semana es especial: una imagen de la primera luz del nuevo habitante del Observatorio Paranal de ESO, el Observatorio Austral SPECULOOS. Esta máquina de búsqueda de planetas pretende observar estrellas cercanas pero tenues para localizar exoplanetas con el fin de que otros telescopios (como el futuro ELT (Extremely Large Telescope) los estudien en profundidad. Compuesto por cuatro telescopios de un metro, bautizados con los nombres de los satélites galileanos de Júpiter, SPECULOOS promete abrir nuevas fronteras en la investigación de exoplanetas.
Sin embargo, esta imagen no corresponde, obviamente, a una estrella débil, sino a una galaxia llamada NGC 6902. Antes de que un telescopio comience a desarrollar su misión principal debe afrontar con éxito un evento denominado "primera luz": la primera vez que se utiliza para una observación científica. Los astrónomos normalmente escogen objetos conocidos para esta prueba inicial de la capacidad de un telescopio, que es mitad demostración y mitad celebración. En este caso, el equipo eligió NGC 6902 como objetivo de la primera luz del telescopio Ganímedes.
El resultado fue esta impresionante imagen de la galaxia espiral, que se encuentra a unos 120 millones de años luz de la Tierra, en la constelación de Sagitario (el arquero). Los brazos espirales de la galaxia crean un remolino hacia el exterior, partiendo de un centro brillante y extendiéndose hasta que se disuelven en corrientes de neblina azul en el borde de la galaxia. Si esto es lo que Ganímedes puede producir en su primera observación de algo que ni siquiera estaba diseñada para observar, sin duda tendremos mucho que ver. ¡Nos esperan muchas sorpresas!
