Vigilando el corazón galáctico
Como centinelas que custodian el centro de nuestra galaxia, el Telescopio de 3,6 metros de ESO y el Telescopio Auxiliar Coudé, se yerguen en esta impresionante fotografía de ultra alta definición desde el Observatorio La Silla, situado a las afueras del sur del desierto chileno de Atacama.
Desde su inauguración, en 1976, el telescopio de 3,6 metros ESO se ha sometido a varias mejoras, incluyendo la instalación de un nuevo espejo secundario que permitió al telescopio seguir siendo más eficiente y productivo que nunca. Desde 2008, el telescopio ha albergado al espectrógrafo HARPS, el cazador de exoplanetas más preciso del mundo. HARPS (High Accuracy Radial velocity Planet Searcher, buscador de planetas de alta precisión por velocidad radial) es el buscador de exoplanetas de baja masa más exitoso hasta la fecha.
El CAT (Coudé Auxiliar Telescope) de 1,4 metros, ahora inactivo, se encuentra en la cúpula más pequeña, a la derecha del telescopio de 3,6 metros. Cuando estaba en funcionamiento, el telescopio proporcionaba información al Espectrómetro Echelle Coudé de 3,6 metros a través de un túnel de luz, que en esta fotografía puede verse conectando las dos instalaciones. Totalmente controlado por ordenador, CAT se utilizó para muy diferentes tipos de observaciones astronómicas, incluyendo el cálculo de la edad de estrellas antiguas.
Situado a 2.400 metros sobre el nivel del mar, lejos de fuentes de contaminación lumínica, el telescopio de 3,6 metros de ESO cuenta con unas excelentes condiciones de observación, igual que toda la familia de telescopios del Observatorio. Esta familia incluye al NTT (New Technology Telescope), al Telescopio MPG/ESO de 2,2 metros y a una selección de telescopios nacionales.
