Tiempo solicitado en el 4to Ciclo de propuestas para ALMA alcanza cifra récord

Una cantidad récord de tiempo de observación fue solicitada por la comunidad astronómica internacional en respuesta a la convocatoria para el envío de propuestas en el marco del Ciclo 4 del Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). La gran demanda para este revolucionario telescopio se vio reflejada en el alza de un 50% en las horas solicitadas en comparación con su ciclo anterior.

Se concedió a más de 400 astrónomos tiempo de observación con ALMA, el radiotelescopio más potente de la Tierra. El proceso de selección demoró casi cinco meses, y especialistas de todo el mundo se reunieron en Viena, Austria, en junio pasado para evaluar las 1.571 propuestas solicitando hacer uso del telescopio. Los 145 asesores científicos del Comité de Revisión de Propuestas de ALMA se reunieron a lo largo de una semana para establecer los criterios y un sistema de clasificación para realizar la selección de las propuestas de la manera más objetiva posible. Esto implicó considerar los diferentes aspectos que determinan la importancia científica y la viabilidad técnica de un proyecto, así como su probabilidad de éxito. Posteriormente, los expertos llevaron a cabo una revisión exhaustiva de cada propuesta basándose en estos criterios.

La cantidad total de tiempo de observación representado por las 1.571 propuestas, presentadas de manera correcta y provenientes de más de 30 países, alcanzó las 18.630 horas (12.285 horas para el conjunto de 12 metros y 6.345 horas para el Compact Array o conjunto compacto). En total, se asignaron 3.000 horas para el conjunto de 12 metros y 1.800 horas para el conjunto compacto.

La categoría con el mayor número de propuestas tanto solicitadas como seleccionadas (aproximadamente una de cada cuatro) fue "Medio Interestelar, Formación Estelar y Astroquímica"; "Cosmología y el Universo a un alto corrimiento al rojo"; "Galaxias y Núcleos Galácticos"; "Discos Circunestelares, Exoplanetas y el Sistema Solar" correspondieron de forma individual a alrededor de una de cada cinco propuestas, mientras que "Evolución Estelar y el Sol" representó una de cada diez aproximadamente.

Las observaciones del Ciclo 4 comenzarán en octubre de 2016 y finalizarán en septiembre de 2017, e incluirán un total de 476 propuestas seleccionadas. Las propuestas seleccionadas tendrán acceso a por lo menos cincuenta y tres antenas de ALMA para sondear el Universo (cuarenta y tres antenas de 12 metros y diez antenas de 7 metros) en longitudes de onda milimétricas y submilimétricas, utilizando siete receptores (bandas 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9 y 10). ALMA será capaz de observar con una resolución angular máxima de 0,029 segundos de arco, empleando una longitud de base máxima de 12,6 kilómetros.
