Puesta en marcha del proyecto ERIS
Nuevo espectrógrafo y cámara de alta resolución para el Very Large Telescope de ESO

ESO ha dado el primer paso hacia la construcción de un nuevo y poderoso instrumento, el Enhanced Resolution Imager and Spectrograph (ERIS), que será instalado en la Unidad de Telescopio 4 del Very Large Telescope de ESO, ubicado sobre el Cerro Paranal en el norte de Chile.
Luego de finalizada la convocatoria para la recepción de propuestas, ESO llevará a cabo el proyecto en conjunto con el Instituto Max Planck de Física Extraterrestre (Garching, Alemania, con la colaboración de la Escuela Politécnica Federal de Zúrich, Suiza) y el Observatorio Astrofísico de Arcetri, perteneciente al INAF (Florencia, Italia). El Observatorio Europeo Austral ha autorizado a las dos instituciones colaboradoras para dar inicio al trabajo. El proyecto tiene como objetivo lograr su "primera luz" a fines de 2017.
ERIS (el que estará activo durante al menos diez años después de su instalación) se beneficiará del Sistema de Óptica Adaptativa (AOF, Adaptive Optics Facility), el que corrige el efecto borroso que produce la atmósfera terrestre. Su meta es captar las imágenes más nítidas alguna vez obtenidas de manera directa, con un solo telescopio de 8 metros [1]. ERIS asumirá el rol del exitoso instrumento NACO, que se acerca al fin de su vida útil.
Las aplicaciones que tendrá ERIS abarcan una amplia variedad de áreas dentro de la astronomía, desde el estudio de cuerpos presentes dentro del Sistema Solar y la observación de exoplanetas hasta la obtención de imágenes de galaxias localizadas en el Universo más distante.
Como un ejemplo de los objetivos científicos de ERIS, sería ideal poder observar una estrella que pasará muy cerca del agujero negro supermasivo que ocupa el centro de la Vía Láctea en mayo de 2018. Esta estrella, conocida como S2, demora dieciséis años en orbitar el agujero negro central, y los científicos ya han logrado obtener datos de una órbita completa (eso0846, eso1151). Al medir el efecto que ejerce el agujero negro supermasivo sobre la estrella, cuando se encuentra a la menor distancia posible con respecto a esta, los astrónomos intentan probar algunos de los efectos gravitacionales expuestos por la teoría de la Relatividad General de Einstein.
Notas
[1]Es posible lograr una resolución mucho mayor para cierto tipo de observaciones al usar varios telescopios de manera conjunta con el Interferómetro del VLT. Sin embargo, ERIS será de utilidad para una gama mucho más amplia de aplicaciones relacionadas a la obtención de imágenes, particularmente para objetos muy poco perceptibles.
