ESO celebra 'Día de la Industria' en Polonia

El 22 de enero de 2013, ESO organizó el 'Día de la Industria' en el Centro Astronómico Nicolás Copérnico en Varsovia, Polonia. El evento entregó información a representantes de instituciones y empresas polacas acerca de ESO y de las oportunidades potenciales para formar parte de sus actividades industriales, en caso de que en algún momento Polonia se incorpore a la organización.
"Estamos muy complacidos de tener esta oportunidad para informar a la industria en Polonia acerca de las actuales instalaciones de ESO, además de sus desafiantes planes para el futuro", dijo Tim de Zeeuw, Director General de ESO, al dar inicio a la reunión. "En un futuro próximo, se presentarán muchas oportunidades fascinantes para los países miembros de ESO, tanto para los científicos como para la industria, ahora que el Consejo de ESO ha aprobado el programa del E-ELT".
Los detectores y telescopios astronómicos modernos están compuestos de una gran variedad de elementos, los que tienen que ser diseñados por ingenieros y científicos, además de ser producidos por institutos y empresas del campo de las ciencias y la tecnología. Los observatorios requieren infraestructura avanzada y equipamiento de última generación para poder funcionar. Esto podría brindar a las empresas e institutos en Polonia distintas posibilidades para cooperar, licitar contratos y desarrollar la tecnología innovadora necesaria.
ESO estuvo representado por su Director General, los jefes de las divisiones responsables de la administración y la tecnología, y el Gerente de Proyecto del E-ELT, quien presentó los planes para el Telescopio Europeo Extremadamente Grande (E-ELT, por sus siglas en inglés), el que cuenta con un presupuesto total que supera los mil millones de euros.
Alistair McPherson, Gerente de Proyecto del E-ELT, concluyó: "El proyecto del E-ELT será un desafío enorme. Se espera que la construcción comience a finales de este año y tendrá una duración de más de una década. El aporte de las industrias vinculadas a la tecnología de vanguardia que pertenecen a los estados miembros de ESO será necesario en diversos ámbitos".
"Existe un gran interés por parte de los empresarios en Polonia", explicó el profesor Marek Sarna, Director del Centro Astronómico Nicolás Copérnico, departamento científico perteneciente a la Academia Polaca de Ciencias. "En el Día de la Industria, los representantes de empresas de diferentes sectores, en particular aquellas del área de la alta tecnología, y politécnicos mostraron gran interés. Además, contamos con la presencia de representantes de instituciones y organismos gubernamentales".
El Día de la Industria fue organizado por la Polish Astronomical Society (PTA) y el Centro Astronómico Nicolás Copérnico de la Academia Polaca de Ciencias (CAMK PAN), en conjunto con ESO.
