Een werveling van kosmisch karamel
Deze foto van de week ziet er bijna goed genoeg uit om op te eten! Ondanks zijn gelijkenis met een overheerlijke werveling van karamel is het in feite een beeld van het NGC 1300 sterrenstelsel, gesitueerd op ongeveer 61 miljoen lichtjaren van de aarde in het sterrenbeeld Eridanus. NGC 1300 is een spiraalvormig sterrenstelsel met een balk van sterren en gas – hier te zien horizontaal in het beeld – en een centrale ring van intense sterformatie.
Dit beeld is een combinatie van observaties uitgevoerd bij verschillende kleuren – of golflengten – van licht. De gouden karamelgloed komt overeen met wolken van moleculair gas, de grondstof waaruit sterren gevormd worden. Deze data werden genomen met de ALMA-antennes (Atacama Large Millimeter / submillimeter Array), waarvan ESO een partner is. De blauwachtige zones in de achtergrond onthullen de distributie van ietsje oudere, reeds gevormde sterren, verbeeld door de Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) op ESO’s Very Large Telescope (VLT).
Deze beelden werden genomen als deel van het Physics at High Angular resolution in Nearby GalaxieS (PHANGS) project, dat hoge resolutie observaties maakt van nabijgelegen sterrenstelsels met telescopen die actief zijn overheen alle golflengtes van het elektromagnetische spectrum. Verschillende golflengtes kunnen een veelheid aan geheimen onthullen over een sterrenstelsel. Door hen te vergelijken kunnen astronomen bestuderen wat de geboorte van nieuwe sterren activeert, stimuleert of net tegenhoudt.
