Nacht vol sterren bij La Silla
Een doordringend helder gordijn van sterren vormt de achtergrond van deze mooie foto die is genomen door astronoom Håkon Dahle. Het silhouet op de voorgrond is Håkon omringd door enkele grote donkere koepels die op de berg van ESO's La Silla Observatorium staan.
Veel professionele astronomen zijn ook enthousiaste fotografen - en wie kan het hen kwalijk nemen? De ESO-locaties in de Atacamawoestijn behoren tot de beste plekken op aarde om sterren te observeren, en het zijn - om dezelfde reden - fantastische plaatsen om de nachtelijke hemel te fotograferen.
Håkon nam deze foto tijdens een weeklange observatie-run met de MPG/ESO 2,2-telescoop. Tijdens de observaties werd de telescoop overgedragen aan een ander team, waardoor Håkon de kans kreeg om de sterrenhemel te bewonderen - en het voor ons vast te leggen.
De Melkweg is op het zuidelijk halfrond helderder dan in het noorden, omdat de zuidelijke regio's van onze planeet directer naar het dichte galactische centrum wijzen. Maar zelfs in het zuiden is de Melkweg aan de nachtelijke hemel nogal lichtzwak. Voor de meesten onder ons overtreft lichtvervuiling van onze steden en van de maan de zwakke gloed van de Melkweg, zodat deze onzichtbaar wordt.
Een van de beste aspecten van het La Silla Observatorium is dat het ver weg van heldere stadslichten ligt, waardoor je er de donkerste nachten op aarde mee kan maken. De atmosfeer is ook heel helder, waardoor er geen waas ontstaat die het zicht kan belemmeren. De hemel boven La Silla is zo donker dat zelfs de Melkweg een schaduw kan veroorzaken.
