Capturer l'univers en ultra haute définition


Cette photo, prise à l'Observatoire paranal de l'ESO, est la première photo de l'ESO Ultra HD Expedition - un voyage pionnier actuellement entrepris par quatre vidéastes de renommée mondiale et les ambassadeurs photo de l'ESO [1]. Equipée d'outils Ultra HD de pointe [2][3], l'équipe capture les trois sites d'observation uniques de l'ESO au Chili dans toute leur grandeur, tout en documentant leur voyage et leurs escapades dans un blog.
Les quatre télescopes de l'Unité - Antu, Kueyen, Melipal et Yepun - un des télescopes auxiliaires du Very Large Telescope (VLT) et du VLT Survey Telescope (VST), sont saisis dans cette image sous un angle inhabituel. Prise à l'aide d'un objectif fisheye, cette technique de photographie produit une vue à 360° du lieu - créant un monde paranal immersif avec la Voie lactée tourbillonnante au centre de celui-ci.
Des gemmes cosmiques lointaines sont dispersées au-dessus du VLT - tachetant les nuances de saphir du ciel nocturne. Près du haut de l'image, la Lune et Vénus sont côte à côte, rayonnant avec Saturne (juste au-dessus du dôme vers le bas de l'image) alors qu'elles s'alignent magnifiquement à travers la ligne de l'écliptique. Antares, Véga et Altaïr - certaines des étoiles les plus brillantes du ciel sont également visibles [4]. Deux galaxies naines irrégulières voisines de la Voie lactée, connues sous le nom de Petit et Grand Nuage de Magellan, peuvent être vues en lueur à gauche, près du Télescope auxiliaire. Les images du dôme complet obtenues grâce à l'objectif fisheye pendant l'expédition seront bientôt distribuées gratuitement pour être utilisées dans les planétariums (comme ceux du prochain batiment ESO Supernova à partir de 2017).
L'expédition a débuté à Santiago du Chili le 25 mars 2014. Le jour suivant, l'équipe est partie pour sa première étape : l'observatoire paranal de l'ESO, où cette image a été prise le 26 mars 2014. Ils y passeront les prochains jours à prendre des photos en accéléré, des vidéos et des panoramas de Paranal - où se trouve l'installation phare de l'ESO, le Very Large Telescope - avant de se rendre à l'Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) et à l'observatoire de La Silla, pour revenir en Europe le 8 avril.
