ESO devient un partenaire du plus grand réseau d’astronomie au sol d’Europe

L’Observatoire Européen Austral (ESO) est devenu un partenaire d’un nouveau projet, lancé la semaine dernière, qui a formé le plus grand réseau d’astronomie au sol d’Europe — the Opticon-RadioNet Pilot (ORP). Ce réseau encourage la collaboration de 37 institutions, dont l’ESO, de l’Europe, l’Australie et l’Afrique du Sud.
Au sein de l’ORP, l’ESO conduira le transfert de connaissances en organisant une large suite de programmes d’entraînement pour la communauté européenne d’astronomie, qui inclura la visite d’étudiants dans les observatoires à travers toute l’Europe, ainsi que des archives, de l’instrumentation et des ateliers de proposition d’écriture. A long-terme, l’ESO aidera également l’ORP à développer des stratégies pour promouvoir des mesures d’opportunités équitables et des actions dans la communauté d’astronomie.
Avec 15 millions d’euros d’investissement de l’European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme, l’ORP fusionne deux réseaux d’astronomie existants (Opticon et RadioNet) pour rassembler plusieurs télescopes et réseaux du monde entier, fournissant aux astronomes européens l’accès à un large éventail d’instruments, ainsi que de l’entraînement pour les astronomes débutants d’entre eux. La part de financement de l’ESO ira à l’assistance technique des infrastructures de l’Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) et du Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI), permettant aux astronomes d’avoir accès aux services d’assistance technique du réseau régional centre d’ALMA. Il servira aussi à développer de nouveaux outils de recherche et d’analyses pour les interféromètres de l’ESO, et à déployer un programme d’entraînement visant les astronomes débutants.
« A travers l’ORP, deux communautés d’astronomie observant à différentes longueurs d’ondes seront rassemblées en une vaste collaboration. Cela permettra la naissance de nouvelles idées et collaborations qui résulteront finalement en un usage plus efficace et productif des installations de l’ESO, en synergie avec l’ensemble des infrastructures des observatoires optique et radio européens, » dit Leonardo Testi, astronome à l’ESO et manager des opérations européennes d’ALMA, et qui est le principal contact de l’initiative ORP.
Le projet ORP est coordonné par le Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique français (CNRS), qui gère le réseau avec l’Université de Cambridge, au Royaume-Uni, et le Max-Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy, en Allemagne.

ALMA est un partenariat de l’ESO (représentant ses Etats-membres), NSF (Etats-Unis) et NINS (Japon), avec NRC (Canada), MOST and ASIAA (Taïwan), et KASI (République de Corée), en coopération avec la République du Chili. The Joint ALMA Observatory est exploité par ESO, AUI/NRAO et NAOJ.
